Forums - Sony - Your Suggestions and hopes for a *BETTER* PSP

I completley disagree with your view on piracy. PSone, PS2, DS and wii have all fallen to pirates and still sit on a great library of game, with immense third party support.

I really want a smaller, lighter PSPhone (without making the screen smaller). One that is simple to develop for but also has the graphical capabilities of the wii atleast. A phone would make sense and is practically inevitable with the huge success of the Ericson cellphone brand. The vibration function of the phone would be given an all-new meaning.

Some of this stuff would be good for the PSP2, but not the current PSP.

Adding another analog stick right now and having developers use it would piss off 40 million current PSP owners.

As far as hackability, forget about it. We've seen time and time again that any measures will be cracked rather easily. Besides, it really has nothing to do with the PSP's software sales.

That is the great thing about opinions, everyone has one. The studies I have seen from the BSA about software piracy and its affect on the economy, jobs, and sales are enough for me. People who pirate software can always justify that what they are doing is okay and not hurting anyone, but its just not true.

So tell me honestly what you think ... Did software piracy affect the sales of Crysis? It is estimated that the piracy to sales ratio in the US is around 5:1. That certainly affected their bottom line, which in the end will change how they make software in the future.

Using the Wii and PS2 are bad examples ... yes piracy will cut into sales numbers, but the install bases are large enough that developers will recoup costs. The PSP on the other hand has an install base of 33-34 Million, and the highest rated game, God of War: Chains of Olympus, only sells 1.2 Million. You don't see a problem here?

Bethesda's Todd Howard "if install base really mattered, we'd all make board games, because there are a lot of tables."

i am probably one of the biggest PSP fans on this board. and I am not greedy, I just want one thing.

PS2 full DLC onto PSP via PSN store for $15 each.

and by that, I mean improved control and introduction of two more shoulder button.

Imagine FFX and DMC3 on PSP? It will make Sony millions by selling those games on PSN store. games that are virtually pennies.

with decent DRM (maybe even if locked to one PSP only), it will be my dream come true. It would also solve the problem of lack of third party support.

psp suggestions
more psn psp games, that will combat piracy.

psp2 suggestions
actually thumb sticks(a right and left stick), like mini versions on the DS3.

keep umd for bc reasons(but eventually fads out in later models or psp3)

built in memory(atleast 16gb)

all games on the psn = no piracy

a clam shell design to keep it protected, or atleast come with some sort of protection.

conclusion
the psp is already a great handheld multimedia device, with a couple updates here and there it will be near perfection. once it finally gets the psn on it i believe games will be on it, old games and new ones alike. and eventually the psp2 will come out with built in memory and all games, and movies as well, on the psn. now umd might still be included for bc purposes but then again they might just shun it.

Every independent economic study has found that such a thing has almost no effect on sales. You can even come to that conclusion just by putting two and two together. If it really were that damaging, then all of the major record labels would have filed for bankruptcy long ago considering that it's long since been possible to download an artist's entire discography within mere hours.

Citing how many times a game has been downloaded doesn't make your argument any sound either. It's nothing but gross speculation because there's no way you can prove how many of those people would have bought the game had it not been available for download. Crysis sold poorly simply because it wasn't that great of a game to begin with. It's funny how developers and the drones who believe everything they say always want to use P2P as a scapegoat every time a game sells poorly.

Hmmmm... first of all we have to decide what we want. A redesign or a PSP2. I say redesign are plenty at this point, so lets stick with the PSP2.

The PSP2 shouldent be IMO a to big technology leap, mainly because its already leading the handheld graphics department by a huge leap. I would like to see the processor speed bumped up to ~ 2x as much, and the RAM from 64 mb to 128-250, and even add more dedicated video/audio memory ( lets say 64/16).

Now, if this is ready, lets bump up the screens resolution, but keep the size. Lets say 720*405 resolution would give us a great picture quality for a 16:9 screen :D If we are ready with this lets add a second analog nub, but something that is even better then the one used on the PSP S&L. Also, keep the mic, but dont put on a camera... its a waste of money, mainly because nobody will want to use a low-end camera to take pics and a higher-end camera would make the price of the device be ridiculously high.

Now, what storage should be used for games? I say UMD ( kill me if you want to ), but one that has more capacity ( lets say 3-4.5 GB ) and faster read speed. DLC is great, but going only for DLC is not a good idea, especially for a handheld IMO. And on what would DLC be stored? Well on the built in 8-16 GB memory and it could be expanded with memory cards that can hold up to 40 GB memory ( yep, they already have 32 GB ones, so IMO untill then 40 GB cards would cost probably ~ 50$ ).

Now that we have all this what is the last and most important thing left? Yes, battery life. The battery should last over 6 hours if everything is on max, and 9-10 hours on low... that would be IMO fair enough ;)

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

The load times are better in recent games but it's still not quick enough... Or maybe it's just that I'm used to the DS' speed...

More games... I want a bigger variety of games! (Non tactical RPGs, platformers, adventure games).

Battery life... It needs to be improved! (Maybe if they used cards instead of UMD it would be better)

Anti piracy... Like everyone said already, it's damaging the PSP software sales.

Cheaper with less of a focus on the tacked on non-gaming features that I don't want and more games that I do. A longer battery life, built in SSD and an improved / second analog nub would also be nice.

@jedson328 - Software piracy is not as common as you think. How can you say that the Wii install base is big enough for piracy not to matter when the Wii has not even passed the PSP in WW install base???

Piracy has nothing to do with the PSP's problems. That's just an excuse IMO.
