Forums - Sales - Does the PS3 need a price drop to compete this holiday season?

Sony could match Microsoft world-wide as things stand this christmas. After all they performed brilliantly last year during the same period with not much software support. Once the Little Big Planet hype machine goes into overdrive it will boost sales. Also remember the spike in XBox sales is inevitable but I doubt they can sustain this effect for more than a few weeks as previous cuts have indicated.

A significant price cut would see a comprehensive PS3 victory but maybe sony have not manufactured enough machines and they may wait until next year for a price cut as they are confident of selling their stock at the higher price.

Loads of people won't get a PS3 until the price comes down. They know from the PS1 and PS2 that one is on the way. Its just a waiting game. There are loads of people waiting to jump on.

A high price can also be a marketing angle used by many companies to portray and image of having a superior product. There certainly has been an element of this to Sony's marketing of the PS3 thus far. But as Dianko pointed out the global economic downturn may force Sony's hand.

First full week after price cut and 90k sales? That's a bit disappointing, not even 2x what it was before. The PS3 has its slowdown and it seems that the 80 GB flopped. Bigger HDD and better controller aren't big selling points. Sony needs to reintroduce BC, at least in the 160 GB. And I don't think that the PS3 needs a price cut. The LBP bundle and all the other ones will be enough to beat the 360.

Sony should definitely act sooner rather than later IMHO

One problem is the "oh I'll get one coz me mates got one" effect. It snowballs.

Last thing Sony needs is all the spotty herberts in the world deciding that the value Xbox 360 with cheap second hand games is a good group purchase for online social gaming.

Once a school playground population hits a critical mass of ownership all others tend to follow the crowd.

Sony lost a year already they cannot stand by and lose another holiday season.

We'll know after a few weeks. The whole thing is starting to look more even, though, so if they want to win this holiday, they might want to do something. Still, I think we should wait for a couple of weeks to see what happens.

The coming recession/depression is going to hurt Sony all around, including the PS3. A proce drop might help them boost sales, but not enough to gain dominance.

The urge to play is a terrible thing to waste.

it is already done, this week all region are better on xbox 360

in UK it is selling at incridible rate at several store.

in Japan next week will be > 10K, becase hopefully there will be no more stock problem.

so i think next week i predict xbox 360 will be > ps3 in all region again.

in Software sales, don't ask.
in online sales item don't ask.

Said it before, of course a price cut would be great but its not like 360 is chrushing ps3 sales and Sony probaly cant afford to cut the price so i think they should make a bundle with 2 games i think that could help quite a bit.

no way... look at the line up of games this holiday. Xbox's lineup is nowhere near as good as PS3's.

PS3: Bioshock, SOCOM, LBP, Resistance.

Xbox: Gears of War 2 and ...........................................................

to yoyo :
Xbox 360 : Gears of War 2, Bioshock for $20, Fable 2, Banjo Kazooie, The Last Remnant, Tales of Vesperia, Viva Pinata TIP, Lips, You're in the Movies, GTA 4 exclusive DLC. Good too see that your making fair comparisons.

PS3 does not need a price cut. Sony should just do what they did last year, just give away 5-10 free blue ray movies, an extra free duel shock controller, and a free game.

Yes. How can the PS3 compete at twice the price of the competition?
