Forums - Sales - Does the PS3 need a price drop to compete this holiday season?

The PS3 isn't selling bad... The 360 is just selling better...

Last year PS3 would have loved these numbers...

Last year PS3 was 43K on September 29th...

I realize it only dropped 1 k from last week, but that`s only the`situation in Others, which was there strongest region. But how long can that region keep it up for them. World Wide sales is the bigger picture. NA just might be a runaway for 360 compared to it. And Japan is not even a factor anymore because in that region the PS3 is selling bad.

No price cut this year

No, but possibly many sales will go away.

The price cuts might cause 360 to outsell PS3 this holdiay season. Regardless, PS3 should still be able to sell 70-110% of what 360 does this holiday season. It depends on whether or not this price drops have a lasting effect. Personally, I think they will, and I think the PS3 will sell roughly 80% of 360 WW this holdiay season, but that is mostly speculation on JRPGS and UK keeping 360 selling roughly even to PS3 in EU and JPN, but 360 will outsell PS3 in the US for sure.

Also, with the world economy softening, people are more apt to buy a $200 (360) or $250 (Wii) system than a $400 (PS3) system.

ps3 sold more then the xbox 360 in the UK by .1M this past year ^^

the momentum isn't gone. It just shifted to 360's price cut. Blu Ray win will help ps3 more in the long run than a 360 price cut will help xbox.

And to answer your question, yes a price drop would significantly increase its chances of competing this Christmas season.

no, maybe only in the u.s. or some really nice bundles.

Hell yeah!

Microsoft will totally screw Sony if no price cut comes in play.

they should wait and see the effects of the price drop mid October,,,,if it dies down then no.if doesn't die down then I think they ll drop 40 bucks.

It is really to early to tell weather Sony needs a price drop for the end of the year. If things don't look good come the end of October Sony will have to think about a cut the first 2 weeks of November. Right now they need to wait and see what kind of effect Ironman, Indy 4, and a few of the other big movies do to help, and see if games like Socom, Little Big Planet, Motorstorm, and Bioshock will help push.

I would not mind if Sony just stuck to their plan for this year. Keep the price the same, sell 10M consoles, and concentrate on marketshare in financial 09. In the current state I think they can hit 20M by the end of this year. That is not a major acheivment, but it is enough to keep devs interested, and make Sony back some of that 3.3Billion. This year they will have done what they needed. The PS3 is fine to live another day and SCEA is stable. Next year they can wait for a cheaper production line and cut the size of the console and the size of the price tag.
