Forums - Sales - Big third party Wii launches

We all know here Wii games tend to have smaller opening weeks than most HD games, but they make up for that with long legs.

However, inspired by this thread, I looked up the biggest third party Wii launches. I managed to find 6 games that had what can be called "big openings":

1

Dragon Quest Swords

341k with Others numbers can be as high as 360k

2

Star Wars: Force Unleashed

297k with Japan numbers can be as high as 300k

3

Mario & Sonic at the Olympics

265k

4

Guitar Hero III

276k

5

Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles

241k

6

Red Steel

143k with Others numbers can be as high as 250k

Some surprising results here!

1) I didn't hear anyone about the great first week numbers (especially in Japan) for Dragon Quest Swords. It it were a PS3 game, it would have the 9th highest opening week on the system.

2) What do you think Others numbers are for the first week of Red Steel? If it's somewhere around 100k (which I think is probable), it had a huge launch considering it was a third party launch game.

3) The game with the biggest launch on the list is also the only game that isn't a million seller yet --> ultimate proof that legs are more important than big launches?

Ok something went terribly wrong there... What's happening with this site?

um, nobody says anything?

OT: Are these first day, or first week? Im surprised on how DQS is not a million, but then again, it doesn't deserve a million.

I'm not checking VGchartz as frequently cos I don't have uni work to get distracted from atm :P

numbers 1, 5 and 6 all seem to be fairly frontloaded

M&S is certainly not though, 265k first week for a game that'll hit 6 or 7 million before it stops - that's one of the leggiest games around.

We'll see how force unleashed turns out - it may or may not have better legs than the other platforms versions

COD5 and Guitar Hero: WT should both have decent openings.
Tales of Symphonia had a launch of 164k in Japan alone.

Monster Hunter for the Wii has a change of being a the top of this list.

GH: WT should top that list haha. No prob haha. COD5 will probably do it as well. And TOS2, possibly Sonic Unleashed, and possibly the 007 game. Point being most of these games have had subliminal launches considering they were overclouded by Ninty games and instead got the sales due to legs. However this time they will have a much better chance for big openers.

yeah this yr a couple of more games should make the list. Any sqaure enix game that should have been anounced(morons!) should've broken into the least easily.

But right now i'm seein GH, rockband, and COD5 breakin top 5 in the list easily.
Also Red Steel 2 should do the job. And definately monster hunter and tales of symphonia. But there may be a few surprises here and there, we'll wait and see

Most of those titles, except Red Steel and Guitar Hero III, are new spinoffs of powerful IPs. They have enough association with the parent IPs to inspire a lot of hyped fans to grab the game early.

Conduit will top the list when it comes out
