You have to ask!? Its the same shoddy "split" D-Pad that dates back to the PS1 controller. I figured after 14 years sony would make some attempt to correct it.
Here is what a really good D-Pad looks like.

This is why Darc Requiem is the smartest person on these boards. Saturn dpad is the best Dpad in gaming. Look it up on the net people...people will kill your mom to get their hands on the limited edition PS2 saturn pad beacuse games like Street Fighter, SHMUPS and other 2D games don't play the same without it.
PS1 and PS2 dualshock Dpads were horrid. PS3 one got a little better...but it still isn't worth a hair on the saturn controllers ass.

Try playing an FPS with it, its gets even worse.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.
| Dallinor said: I don't think I've ever heard a person complain about the D-pad on the Dualshock before. The placement of the analogues, the lack of triggers and the weight of the Sixaxis are the usual points of contest. In my opinion the split-up buttons of the Dualshock make it more accessible and accurate for the fingertips, and helps distinguish each direction clearly. It feels more arkward to the touch directing with what is essentially one big button on the Saturn controller (Although I like the curves).

that if you want to go forward, left, right or back.
Try pulling off a dragon punch or a Zangiefs or Guiles super move in street fighter. You will understand why dual shock is horrible.
I paid over 140 dollars for the right adapters to be able to play 2d xbox live arcade games with a saturn pad on the xbox 360. And it was worth every penny... thanks to the fact that console makers (all 3) don't know how to make proper Dpads anymore.
Well done cliff 10/10 for your assesment of the ps3 controller
And sonys controller has lasted 3 generations because prior to the 360's pad coming out the only pad that beat the ps1, ps2 or ps3 pad was the Sega saturn pad, Thats why Sony aint changed it for 14 years (they didn't need to)
Sega Saturn Pad (10/10)
N64 pad...... hhhmmmmmmmm 5/10
Dreamcast pad...... hhhmmmmmmmm 5/10
Gamecube pad.... 6/10
Origional xbox pad...... 1/10 (and thats generous)
360 pad (9/10, only the d-pad lets it down)
Dallinor there were complaints about the D-Pad on the PS1 controller from the systems inception. Sony's controller design is flat out lazy. They have done little if anything to remedy the design flaws. The D-Pad design and analog placement being the two biggest issues. I will post pictures of the Dual Shock, Dual Shock 2, Sixaxis, and Dual Shock 3 to illustrate the point.

I miss some of those older times when companies actually knew how to make a good d-pad. The SNES had a decent one. The 6-button Genesis controller had a decent one too (the 3 button's was too sharp IMO but still better than most of what we see today).

Yep, snes, genesis, saturn are the classic ones...we have to turn to 3rd party controller makers for good pads.
There was a logitech wireless pad for ps2...MUCH better than dualshock. Lets see what Mad Katz does with the street Fighter 4 pads.

you do realise that controller preference is opinion, right? while you think the ps controller is horrible, i think it's the best controller ever made. i think the gamecube controller is horrid, but other people think it's the best too. what i'm basically trying to say is that you can't call the design 'lazy', just because it doesn't suit your needs properly. it's a design, which many people like, that's why sony decided to keep it the way it is.
if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
DUELSHOCK 1,2,3 = BEST CONTROLLER, standard and easy to adjust to the buttons, durable ,d-pad is the best(if you hate the d-pad that means you never played a SONY console) and most comfortable
by the way, Duelshock controller wasn't a problem in the PS1 and PS2 era,so why make a big scene off the PS3 Duelshock 3 when they are all the same in terms of artistic design (not features) ??????
wtf ?
