I hope this one kills the stupd 10-year-plan meme. So basically Sony is planning to rush the market with a ps4 that's basically a bumped up-ps3, AKA 100% BC so they can shut off quick the ps3 and pull off a fast and smooth transition ala GC-Wii.

why would keeping the cell reduce game development costs??? I thought the cell was the problem there (difficult to program for) and thus keeping it keeps the problem too....

The Wii being 2 gamecubes is ok because it had the wii mote (the real upgrade in the nint console).... a PS4 being 2 PS3s would not be OK on it's own....

Code reusability. After a dev is done with a project they don't move all their codebase to the trash. If the architectures are the same they can reuse the code. The cell's asymmetric architecture will still be a pain in the ass but at least they'll be able to reuse their engines.

So while Ps3 is still selling and having games released for it Ms will dump their 360 like they did with xbox and force people to upgrade and spend another 400$.

The ps3 had over 100 million users out there when the ps3 launched - that's why it has tails. Do you foresee the ps3 having a 100 million userbase by 2011? That's three years away - it needs to average 28 million sales / year during the period. It'll be two years old by november and won't have even hit 20 million.

Btw, are you into real state business? I have a nice condo for sale in NY, with marvelous vistas over the city and a hundred feet granite statue of Liberty below it. I'm willing to toss in the statue in the deal if you pay upfront.

I hope so. This would keep costs down by a large amount, and the R & D is already done, so no need for that. This is a smart move all around if you ask me.

The PS1 and PS2 dominated the market. They sold over 100 million consoles each and netted Sony a substantial profit. The PS3 has been a money pit and currently resides in third place. When will Sony fans realize that a consoles market share determines its level of support after its successor launches. A dominant first place console gets strong support after its replacement is launched. Second and third place consoles essentially fade away a year after they are replaced.

You are quick. Posting at work always seems to put me at a disadvantage.

No it isn't and no it won't happen. They will use a CELL successor. Nintendo was able to succeed with last-gen technology by completely changing the target group. Unlike Sony finds some revolutionary new input device/whatever. They do not have the luxury and still need to compete on the high end with Microsoft.
We shouldn't forget that the HD market is as big as the Wii market and it sells far more games at higher prices. So Sony would be stupid to concede this to MS.
Using an upgraded CELL could be just as backwards compatible.

Jeeeeeezzzzz, How we got on a Ninty -v- Sony thing is BEYOND ME...back to what the original topics about. In trying to decipher what I can, I agree with this article, it's something I've said for a while, that the next gen of gaming PROBABLY won't be as advanced as this one...To the untrained eye you won't be able to tell.

...With 3rd party titles POSSIBLY going multiplat from now on, add in minimal technical advances, it's the reason why I feel that companies first party offerings HAVE to be the reason for someone to purchase their console.
