Forums - Gaming - Lack of Survival Horror games - previous thread follow up

Few months ago I made a following thread wondering if they will ever be another AAA survival horror game.

http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=39569

Many of you were to point out that Resident Evil 4 and 5 will proudly carry the torch of survival horror, while others including myself were stating that RE series stopped being survival horror with part 4s entry in to action adventure.

Today Kotaku ran a feature called "Does Survival Horror Really Still Exist?"

I thought it was a great editorial I figured I'd share here as it explains what survival horror used to be, how it got lost along the way and what may bring it back.

Anyone that was arguing that Resident Evil 4(and 5) are survival horror games really needs to read this...and lets see if you can still argue that resident evil is pro-survival horrorafter.

I just got Dementium the Ward.

It sure seems like Survival horror to me.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

it would be good to have true survival horrors, resi 4 and 5 were more towards the action genre.

i do like the look of siren when it comes on disc, and the new wii fatal frame looks good. apart from that theres only a few left on horizon

Very good. It has many characteristics of survival horror games. Low ammo count, shitty default weapon and a creepy environment, full of weird rooms. The audio is fantastic, probably the best on the DS outside of Professor Layton. The fact that it's so dark and you can't use both a flashlight and a weapon simultaneously helps in the creepiness factor. The only drawback is the way the game must be played. It leaves my fingers cramping after a while, so I can't play it for long periods of time. Basically you use the D-Pad to move, the stylus to look around, the L Button to use a weapon and the R button to change weapons. It's not very comfortable but it does control well.

to be honest with u, a true survival horror may have gone into the niche range now. i truly cannot imagine any to be big.

Actually, I love the controls in Dementium.

It's definitely good survival horror, but there are two glaring faults with the game.

Fault 1: enemies respawn. This gets really annoying because you'll battle through a tough room, decide that's not really the way you wanted to go, and know full well that you'll have to find the exact same monsters hiding in the exact same maintenance closets on the way back.

Fault 2: and this is the huge one, the saving system. It only saves at the beginning of each chapter. Getting killed by the end level boss and realizing you've got to go a half hour of play back to the beginning really blows. Especially since it means you once again have to find the map for that level. It's almost a deal breaker.

But still, the game is a lot of fun. And damn creepy for any game, let alone a DS one.

i still see them as survival horror , only watered down

the elements are still there, you aganist a horde of monsters, if you run out of ammo run or die, scares are possiable around every corner and such

its just that some games use differnt elemet

I do like the controls, they just don't fit comfortably in my hand. They work like a charm, and 180 degree turns are executed perfectly with a simple quick motion on the stylus. It's just that to hit the R button in the heat of battle requires you to use your pinky finger since the rest of your hand is involved with the stylus and my left index finger cramps up staying stationary over the L button.

I agree with the two faults. What I don't understand is if enemies respawn why they couldn't have the health pills and ammo respawn also. At least then it would be fair ground since you really can't outrun enemies in this game once they're targeted towards you.

A very good survival horror game is siren blood curse. Really creepy. You can get a blu-ray version from asia with english audio and english subtitles. Make sure it is the asian version though....
