Forums - Sales - Top Ten Console Sales - Exclusives vs. Multi-Platform

I thought it would be fun to look at how the top ten list of console sales have shaped up, first using exclusives and then adding in multiplatform games. All multi-platform numbers count Wii/360/PS3 sales only, in order to look at the current generation consoles (obviously games like Guitar Hero and Madden/FIFA sell a lot on PS2 as well). I also took the list out to twelve games, so that Wii Sports and Wii Play can be ignored if desired. All numbers come from VGChartz.

Exclusives

1) Wii Sports 29.06m
2) Wii Play 15.00m
3) Halo 3 8.23m
4) Mario Kart Wii 8.07m
5) Wii Fit 7.86m
6) Super Mario Galaxy 6.98m
7) Smash Brothers Brawl 6.96m
8) Mario and Sonic 5.58m
9) Mario Party 5.46m
10) Gears of War 5.25m
11) Zelda Twilight Princess 4.80m
12) Forza Motorsport 4.02m
(PS3 Best: Motorstorm 3.52m)

Exclusives + Multi-Platform

1) Wii Sports 29.06m
2) Wii Play 15.00m
3) Grand Theft Auto IV 10.45m (5.97m + 4.48m)
4) Call of Duty 4 10.05m (6.44m + 3.61m)
5) Guitar Hero III 8.23m (3.42m + 3.25m + 1.56m)
5) Halo 3 8.23m
7) Mario Kart Wii 8.07m
8) Wii Fit 7.86m
9) Super Mario Galaxy 6.98m
10) Smash Brothers Brawl 6.96m
11) Assassin's Creed 6.79m (3.91m + 2.88m)
12) Mario and Sonic 5.58m
13) Mario Party 5.46m

Not surprisingly, the Wii and 360 dominate the exclusives list. (It's a little troubling that PS3 can't get a single exclusive game into the top 10 list.) What surprised me is how well the Wii did on the multi-platform list. Even throwing out Wii Sports and Wii Play, the console still puts five exclusives into the top 10 (Wii Fit #5, Mario Galaxy #6, Smash Brothers #7, Mario and Sonic #9, and Mario Party #10) and shares the multiplatform Guitar Hero for a sixth game. The 360 and PS3 also do rather well, with five and four games respectively - although it's worth noting that the platforms share four games in common (GTA, Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, Assassin's Creed). If you do count Wii Sports/Wii Play, the numbers look considerably better for Wii. Also interesting was that no Madden or FIFA game could make it into the top ten - both are still heavily reliant on PS2 sales. Last year's Madden was closest with a little over 4m in sales on the current three consoles.

Anyway, I don't really have an argument here, just wanted to share some interesting data. Enjoy.

I wouldn't worry about that. There's probably plenty of generous people who'd be more then willing to bring an argument into your thread.

That is interesting, thanks for sharing:)

-UBISOFT BOYCOTT!-

You forgot to add Mario Kart Wii to the Exclusives + Multi-Platform list.

Yeah, its only a matter of time before the first "Wii Sports/Play don't count [waaaaaaaaa, waaaaaaaaa]" crap.

Nice work.

Assassin's Creed did very well for a new IP.
Only only one 3rd party published game in the exclusives list. And that game can barely be called 3rd party. (Mario and Sonic)

It's true, but luckily sales don't indicate quality...they just indicate future support for your console from 3rd parties.

However, when your exclusives that look to be making the most money are 1st/2nd party games, sales don't matter because you're going to keep making them anyway.

The PS3 is in a great position because its hardware is relatively equal to another console that historically sells a lot more software, so it'll always catch those ports. It's like the Wii/PS2 relationship.

As the userbase for the PS3 grows, tentpole titles will eventually creep their way on the list. I can see XIII, and Gran Turismo both making that list.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.
