Forums - Sales - Prices of controllers

"if you add 3 controllers to a Wii system purchase to play those cool party games it becomes just as expensive as a XBox or PS3 purchase." (uh, 360 is cheaper even ignoring controllers)

Lets test this claim shall we?
Wii Play + 2 Wii Motes + 3 nunchuks + a Wii
= $440
A PS3 game + 3 Dualshocks + PS3 80gb
= $625

If I know anything about which number is bigger than the other number :p Sorry champ

Now lets test another claim
"dont forget motion plus for the wii probably 19.99 more"

Ahh, thank you for mentioning this.
Lets buy Wii Sports resort, and 3 other Wii motion pluses for the price they will actually be (10)
Giving a total of $80
But then we have an extra Wii game, so to counter it, we must buy a PS360 game at rrp
Giving a total of $60
Ok, maybe this claim has some validity, $20 dollars of validity to be precise

[/maths lesson]

You're my hero, Scotty.

Wii has more 20 million sellers than PS3 has 5 million sellers.

PS3 - $54.99

Wii - $39.99 Wimote + $19.99 Nunchuck = $59.98

XBox 360 - $49.99

prices from Best Buy for new equipment.

thoughts, wow if you add 3 controllers to a Wii system purchase to play those cool party games it becomes just as expensive as a XBox or PS3 purchase.

and is there ANY profit made for Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo on each controller sale at these prices?  (please no pure speculation - I can daydream too)

I don't have any proof but it would be pretty stupid to sell the system and the periferals at a loss.  So I am 99.999999999999999999999999% sure that controllers are sold at a profit.

uh Scotty - lets take a look at what I was referring too. Which is the cost to do what each system's strong suit is. (Wii = party games PS3=hardcore games) Anyone can look at a $249 price of wii and $399 for PS3 and say which is a higher. What I was referring too takes a little bit of thought, but let me lay it out for you....

Wii Console $249
3 x Wiimotes $120
3 x Nunchuck $60
1x Mario Party $50

equals = $479

PS3 console $400
1x Uncharted $60

equals = $460

So Scottie - with your elite math skills - can you tell me which # is bigger?

Actually, the strong suit of the PS3 is graphics, so you'll have to include the price of a HD TV, so let's add 1000$ to the PS3 price. Only say 10% of the population has a HD TV already, so the average consumer has to pay 900$ more for the 'strong suit' of the Wii.

(Wii fans can do arbitrary and ridiculous math too)

You do know how pointless it is to say that? Why don't you add Blu ray movies, HD tv and surround sound since you can't get the most out of your PS3 with out them. See what I am saying? And your genralizing the wii saying all it has is party games if it is all you would need then you get wii sports with the wii. I don't like to get personal but statments like these make me...

Former something....

It is well known that console makers earn a lot on the controllers they make,
I wonder why the ps3 controller is like 5 bucks more expensive than its 360 counter part, there isn't really any difference

It's sturdier+has a far better D-pad.

A couple of flaws with this:

1. Not everyone buys three extra controllers.
2. Most people buy Wii Play because you get a controller and a game for $50.

Interesting, last generation, I had two Logitech PS2 controllers, two Logitech Xbox controllers, and four Wavebirds (even though there are only three people in my house). I guess people just buy more controllers for Nintendo systems.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

I remember when I thought paying $20 for a first party Genesis controller was expensive. Prices have really gone up for controllers and the only way I buy them now is if I find some kind of sale for them on Amazon or something.

I don't get third party controllers just because I have a bad history with most of them.

Arg, yes so expensive, had to decide between Soulcaliber IV or a controller I chose the latter but now i have no money for a game! :(

Blacksaber - why would a simple statement of facts make you mad?

You buy 3 extra controllers because the single player gameplay depth is missing from a lot of Wii games and playing with a friend is the only way they are fun. (wii play, wii sports, mario party, rayman 1&2, etc)

The point is the total cost of getting up and running. Trying to add the cost of the TV to the PS3? Thats just silly and pretty much tells me you see nothing wrong with my point so you will try to move the argument to something else.

Think of it as the cost to mom & dad buying a gift for their son. If they just get their son a Wii and leave him with only the 1 included controller and Wii Play - is he going to be happy? Or is he heading to Best Buy to buy the rest of the stuff he needs for when he invites his friends over to play? If you get him a PS3 and Uncharted and he wont leave his room for a couple days.
