Blu-ray is still doing better than DVD was at this timepoint. I don't understand those who say it will flop. What did they expect, that Blu-ray will beat DVD on day one?

The Blu-Ray market is set to triple in 2008 (both stand-alone player sales and software sales) compared to 2007. According to research data a vast majority of PS3 owners in the US own HDTVs and watch Blu-Ray movies. With pricedrops PS3, standalone Blu-Ray player and software sales will go up.

I think a lot of negatism has to do with console fans of rival consoles, especially many 360 fans want things to be negative because it comes by default with the PS3 and not with other consoles.

You are right Rome wasn't built in a day. Not everyone will buy a HDTV, PS3 or standalone Blu-Ray player day one. DVD's unusual quick victory over VHS (just 6 years until it outsold the at the time well established format) has been widely applauded.

Well on this forum, people that tend to be positive about bluray adoption are mostly ps3 purchasers who have to justify why they are paying more for a console that thus far has not really shown any gaming advantages. Bluray is that jsutification.

Nah, there have been various games which wouldn't have fitted on a 6.8 GB 360 DVD in the same quality. PS3 games with 7.1 lossless audio have been released, MGS4 was released with high quality assets, PS3 games don't scratch at all, etc. Blu-Ray is already showing its added worth, this trend is of course continuing into the future.

Ps3 users don't have to justify their purchase by blu-ray. Blu ray is a advantage that will show down the road. Only 2 years into Ps3 life cycle and already some games can only be made on blu ray. Once devs get their heads around it and more exclusives come bluray will show its self as better. Right now blu ray doesn't mean much because ps3 games get gimped from how limited dvd and multi plat games have to be.

Imagine GTA4 using the whole blu ray disc and being exclusive, ya sucks xbox exists sometimes.

I do beleive that Blu-Ray does offer more in the way of content they can put onto the disks; things like bonus content, multiple tracks etc. can all be done on DVD, but the Blu-Ray with it's Java ability allows for much more interesting content than DVD, as well as the menu that can be pulled up during playback etc.

These factors also are difficult to put into a digital download, or at least are a lot more difficult to do making Blu-Ray better in my eyes in that respect (capped internet FTL)

That said, I only own three Blu-ray movie disks (Men In Black, Final Fantasy: Spirits Within, and Tallatega nights or however it's spelled) that is purely down to not having a large enough selection available to suit my tastes - yet.
However, as studios and printing companies make the Blu-Ray making process easier and cheaper I fully expect that to change.

There weren't Portable DVD players this far into the DVD release either!

Give it a couple of years, nobody will use a DVD player any more, there will be portable blu-ray players, all computers and laptops will be able to play blu-ray, the toaster will be able to play blu-ray.

It's too early to pronounce it dead.

In player sales.... when you count the PS3 as a player.  In Disc sales... it's behind by tens of millions.  When Blu-ray was at 15 million in the US... DVD was at over 60 million in a comparable timeframe.

Still blu-ray should still succeed the movie companies will push for being able to resell there movies every time.

Even if it doesn't replaced DVD as the dominant format it'll still be around, it's not going to go UMD or anything.  It'd be a more successful Laserdisc, something that the videophiles and moviephiles get and use until the next better format comes along.

Can you quote a source?

DVD was launched in March 1997 & BR in March 2006. I cannot find any sales record and am genuinely interest in the volume each respective format have sold in those time.

Well for one..... up to current through missing 2006 sales for Blu-ray.

Puts Blu-ray roughtly 80 Million behind in disc sales.  Granted shipped vs sold.  However it's not going to be 80 million.

Blu-ray hit 15 million including 2006 i believe around July this year.

It hit 9 million in march of this year.

When DVD had sold around 42 million.

If numbers are accurate even taking into account the current US economic slump, the number seems fairly dissapointing. Pricing is an issue perhaps? With the numbers of studios and manufacturers behind the platform I can't really see it losing in the long term though.

Thanks for the info man!

I want to see how well the bluray Dark Knight sells compared to DvD. DvD was adopted faster because you didn't need a new tv to watch them. To get full potential of blu ray you need a player and a hdtv which is a huge money sink to do at once. I still don't know many people with a HdTv.

Blu-Ray will not completely replace DVD, like DVD replaced VHS. Both will be around for a long time. Mainstream consumers do not need HD right now.

HD cable did not replace SD cable.
HD game consoles did not replace SD game consoles.
HD camcorders did not replace SD camcorders.
Blu-Ray will not replace DVD.

That does not mean that Blu-Ray will not be successful, that just means that a lot of people will not care to upgrade right now.

SONY fanboys just got pwned!!

My thoughts? A dual layer DVD-9 does not have enough space for future multimedia purposes. HD adaptation is slow so like somebody above me said, Blu Ray may not completely replace DVD, but I don't think it is a dying format though.
