Intel and SanDisk are going to be releasing VERY cheap solid state drives. We're talking 8 GB drives with a small form factor and low power requirements becoming available in the 4th quarter for $45 or so. Why even put a hard drive in a slimline console when by next spring they might be able to put in a solid state drive for fairly cheap in large OEM quantities?
Apple can put a 120 GB drive in an iPod, but for some reason people seem to think that a slimline console can't accommodate a 20-60 GB drive. Strange.

cool.

yeah but its microsofts console we are talking about. the same microsoft that makes its own type of hdd for its consoles. if it were to make a slimline and it was unable to fit its hdd that are already out on the market then alot of people might be mad and what not. of course they can jump their own hdd ship and adopt those solid state drives but 1. we dont know if this rumor is true 2. i doubt microsoft would stop trying to make cash off their own hdd

Cheap shot head back to your boards please
PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.
Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

Yeah you read my mind what we pay for the propertery hard drives no one is going to dump theres for the new one, plus even if your old one goes you could get an arcade and just moe your hard drive which you couldnt do with the new slimline.
No way is MS going to stop with the properity HDD at least not in this Gen round.
I like the 45nm idea and maybe the drive fits on a different way

I wonder how the Slim Line X360 would sell at a cheaper price than the current X360's?

You guys don't really believe that a slimline console would accept the old hard drives, considering their size, do you? Trying to design a new slim version of a console so that a huge previous-model drive casing could be attached doesn't make any sense. The high power requirements alone would be a barrier. Just plugging one of those monsters onto the end of a slimline 360 might tip the thing over.
I can buy the argument that MS might very well decide to keep making money off a new slimline-compatible drive by placing it into a custom package that only they sell, but it would likely be dramatically smaller (particularly if they used solid state drives or the tiny drives in an iPod), and they would just include a cable to transfer data from the old drive to the new. Most likely this new drive would just plug into a proprietary socket similar to something a flash card would use.
Just think about what you're saying... if they REALLY want to make more money with a new slimline model, then allowing people to keep their old drives isn't going to make them as much money.

No...It won't, I guarantee you this.

It will probably cost Microsoft a small fortune less to make, and make them more money per console (less parts, smaller chips) but your probably right that the price for consumers won't lower.
