Forums - Sony - Yoshida: PS3's lack of fortunes in Japan is "mainly a software thing"

since 360 is easier they tend to lean towards 360 unintentionally.

... what?

I think it's very intentional. If it's easier to develop for, why not go that route? Shorter development cycle, less money out, potentially more ROI. Sony has a ways to go to woo developers the way Microsoft has this gen, whether it be with better development tools or more money lining their pockets.

OT: Well, besides software now, it's bang for your buck. The 360 is cheaper than the Wii and has more Japanese oriented titles than the PS3. Not only that, I bet the reseller market for the 360 is booming because of the back catalog.

no, its actually abit hurt due piracy nothing big in the market but its easier to find cheap

360 game than ps3 games but not much and also resell value its inferior even to the wii because you know its cheaper than the wii WORLWIDE.

shams@ FF13 and versus are exclusive to japan people would buy ps3 at original price just to play those games, gran turismo 5 its also a great hardware seller, white knight chronicles its not out yet.

we don't know where dragon quest X is going yet dragon quest ix is almost done and level 5 releasing psp games, neither kingdom heats III have been announced yet.

also 360 is selling software even worse than the ps3 overall, they barely get to 150k in japan even jrpgs.

Obvious answer is obvious.

Sony need to make internal RPG studios. Don't buy any studio or anything, I mean make some new original studios for RPGs. The amount of shooters they have is pathetic. RPGs or bust.

 Agreed, Sony needs to get there facts straight, and it seems they'll begin with White Knight.

"Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has told VG247 that PS3 hasn’t yet seen explosive fortunes in Japan because the right software hasn’t yet been released for the machine."

it's kinda obvious but it's good that they know it and acknowledge it and hopefully they have a plan to fix it.

I'd respond, except I'm not sure what you're saying. I think you're missing a number of words to make this a coherent response.

So its low sales are "mainly a software thing..."

Is this supposed to be a good thing? Am I missing something here? I thought pretty much every losing console's main problem is "mainly a software thing."

I'm not sure why everyone has to go to the RPG route. RPG aren't lighting up the Wii charts in Japan, and it's quite a healthy console. An RPG didn't cause the PSP to rise from the ashes either. The problem Sony has is they purposely catered to the western market this time, and it bit them in the ass. At this point, they can make strides towards the Japanese market, but they are probably years away from getting that kind of software out if they just now realized this, and years from now will just be too late.

RPGs aren't lining up the Wii charts because not many have been released, and most of the ones that have are niche so they only lasted 1-2 weeks. Guarantee any huge RPG for the Wii will light up the charts.

But for Sony, look at the 360 in Japan. ToV and IU helped the 360 for uber low numbers to the 20-30k in Japan range which is a lot!

I'm going to agree its too late though. It'd take them a long time to set up a studio, get them ready, and make a big game (you know how Sony are with many PS3 games. They take years and years...) so it's a shame. Games like WKS/Last Remnant/FF are so far apart from each other though so we'd expect a boost for a while, but then back down to low numbers. The fact that big games in Japan for the PS3 is so far apart is a really bad problem.

Really a shame. I don't like Sony's games at all, but making some RPGs like they did for the PS1 (ike Legend of the Dragoon) would make me like some of their games.

@Dgc

Then they have a lot more in 2009...

I don't like shooters at all, and they have a lot coming, so...meh.

@Seraphic

Not really. WKS is only one game...and it's not even made by them. They need internal RPGs, but like I said to Onyx, it's too late...

 I wouldnt say its "to late" right now, they may snap back with a folklore II or something, or they (i hope) may buy out rights to Chaos Legion II and from there on start there own JRPG team, of course this is just all wishful thinking on my part, but oh well.

And yeah sony may not be "MAKING" WKC per-sa but its being published by sony everywere so its a "Sony" Series for sure, sort of like infiniti undoscovery kinda, although MS doesnt publish (Square did something at the last min and pulled a fast one) but they still have some sort of rights to the game, well same thing goes for WKC for the PS3 sept sonys publishing for sure...unless level 5 out of the blue pulls a square enix which i doubt to some extent.

well white knight will help and isn't ff13 still a ps3 exclusive in japan?

@sega

Yeah, they'll help. WKS comes out in 3 months though, and FF XIII comes out...who knows when.

yeah it's getting pretty damn frustrating waitin for ff13. I still think the americas will see it until 2010 along with pal regions. Hopefully japan can get it in '09.
