Forums - Microsoft - So I downloaded the Fracture demo and...

... I'm wondering why this game isn't getting more attention.

The demo is pretty much a tutorial. We get a good look at 3 of the 4 grenades and about 5 weapons. It plays very similarly to Gears as expected, but the bumpers control terrain deformation through a laser-type weapon; RB- Raise the ground, LB- Lower the ground.

The first weapon is very much like the Assault Rifle from Halo. It has a large reticule, so it's more deadly in close quarters. We then get a normal frag-like grenade.

After using terrain deformation to get past a few obstacles and puzzle-like aspects, we destroy a some crates with our grenades and a shed with our newly acquired rocket launcher. Very cool. We also get terrain deforming grenades; one type raises the ground, the other lowers it.

We shoot the leg of a water tower to collapse it. Out falls a grenade launcher, however, the grenades can attach to surfaces. We use it to take out the legs of a landing pad, which sends down our next item, another grenade. This grenade shoots up a pillar of earth where thrown. We use it to create a ramp, leading to our next weapon, a sniper rifle. We're assigned two targets and easily take them out. Aiming with the sniper is very simple. It doesn't shake or move on its own.

We meet up with our squadron and out of nowhere, the villain appears. He runs and we chase him down, killing all of his genetically enhanced guards. The gameplay is really awesome. Using deformation to create cover when you're weak or need to reload is great. We can also pick up the guns that the enemy uses. It's pretty much a machine gun.

We get to the end of the chase after a lot of killing some puzzle aspects that require deformation only to watch the baddy take off in a airship. More waves of baddies come and we wipe them out easily. It's here, at the end, where we get the coolest weapon yet, a torpedo-like launcher. The missile burrows underground and explodes upon detonation or when it hits a surface. It's awesome to watch the ground moving as it goes forward. You enter your airship and the demo ends.

Overall, I'm really surprised. I haven't wanted to play more of a demo since Bioshock. The graphics are great (there are much better- MGS4). The cutscenes look good, but again, other games are more impressive. Also, the AI could be better, but playing on the medium difficulty could explain that. The gameplay is what stands out, though. The concept of terrain deformation is genius and opens huge possibilities for gameplay. I can't wait to purchase this game.

Note: You can't infinitely raise or lower the terrain. It only goes so much.

My thoughts on why such an innovative game like this isn't being pushed:

Microsoft is pushing Banjo and Gears 2. Sony is pushing LittleBigPlanet and Resistance 2.

is it for both systems or what?

Yes, it's being released for both the Xbox 360 and the PS3.

I would have to say it's not getting attention because the use of terrain deformations comes off as more of a gimmick than an innovation to most. The issue is that the game surrounding the terrain deformation is lacking polish in all kinds of forms, so the terrain deformation comes off as more of a gimmick they're counting on to drive sales because of the lack of polish for the rest of the title instead of an innovation added to an already good game.

I sincerely hope that the polish issues are fixed before the actual release of the game, but what I saw from the Demo did not impress.

...

Looks like Haze to me...
With the huge competition in shooters in the next 2 months it's unlikely this game will do any good..

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

I have a theory on why Microsoft and Sony are pushing those games instead of Fracture. Microsoft and Sony are publishing those games and Lucas Arts is publishing Fracture, so it's Lucas Arts' responsibility to market it.

Oh and I hated the Fracture demo. The whole rising and lowering the earth ended up being just some gimmick. There are arrows pointing you to where you need to deform the earth, and it's all done in a grid-like fashion, so it never really feels like you have any control over how the earth is deformed. It's either up or down in a mound. There's a grenade that will make a spike that comes from underneath the ground. I was hoping, with this technology, something I was a bit more in control of.

Tag: Became a freaking mod and a complete douche, coincidentally, at the same time.

It wasn't a bad game the terrain deformation only goes so far this looks like a game that drop to $30.00 I will pick up

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

Wow. Really? Sure, you can't deform everything, but it adds so much more to the game. I didn't see it as gimmicky at all.

The developers have a lot of work to make as so much earth have the ability to move in any way the player wants it to move. It's impressive because so much of the game has the ability to be changed according to what the player wants. How many other games have ground that changes when a normal frag grenade is thrown?

You're right about the publishing thing. Oops.

The arrows were there because it was the tutorial. Later on in the demo, they weren't used.

And I really felt like I had a lot of control. Like I said, you can't deform everything, but I was impressed. Yes, it's either mound up or down, but creating a blockade was easy. Forming a wall is easy. I really give the team credit. It took a lot of work to create something with so much flexibility.

i downloaded the fracture demo off psn, and i gave it thumbs up, the grafix on mass effect should have been like fracture

all in all a good game
