... I'm wondering why this game isn't getting more attention.
The demo is pretty much a tutorial. We get a good look at 3 of the 4 grenades and about 5 weapons. It plays very similarly to Gears as expected, but the bumpers control terrain deformation through a laser-type weapon; RB- Raise the ground, LB- Lower the ground.
The first weapon is very much like the Assault Rifle from Halo. It has a large reticule, so it's more deadly in close quarters. We then get a normal frag-like grenade.
After using terrain deformation to get past a few obstacles and puzzle-like aspects, we destroy a some crates with our grenades and a shed with our newly acquired rocket launcher. Very cool. We also get terrain deforming grenades; one type raises the ground, the other lowers it.
We shoot the leg of a water tower to collapse it. Out falls a grenade launcher, however, the grenades can attach to surfaces. We use it to take out the legs of a landing pad, which sends down our next item, another grenade. This grenade shoots up a pillar of earth where thrown. We use it to create a ramp, leading to our next weapon, a sniper rifle. We're assigned two targets and easily take them out. Aiming with the sniper is very simple. It doesn't shake or move on its own.
We meet up with our squadron and out of nowhere, the villain appears. He runs and we chase him down, killing all of his genetically enhanced guards. The gameplay is really awesome. Using deformation to create cover when you're weak or need to reload is great. We can also pick up the guns that the enemy uses. It's pretty much a machine gun.
We get to the end of the chase after a lot of killing some puzzle aspects that require deformation only to watch the baddy take off in a airship. More waves of baddies come and we wipe them out easily. It's here, at the end, where we get the coolest weapon yet, a torpedo-like launcher. The missile burrows underground and explodes upon detonation or when it hits a surface. It's awesome to watch the ground moving as it goes forward. You enter your airship and the demo ends.
Overall, I'm really surprised. I haven't wanted to play more of a demo since Bioshock. The graphics are great (there are much better- MGS4). The cutscenes look good, but again, other games are more impressive. Also, the AI could be better, but playing on the medium difficulty could explain that. The gameplay is what stands out, though. The concept of terrain deformation is genius and opens huge possibilities for gameplay. I can't wait to purchase this game.
Note: You can't infinitely raise or lower the terrain. It only goes so much.
My thoughts on why such an innovative game like this isn't being pushed:
Microsoft is pushing Banjo and Gears 2. Sony is pushing LittleBigPlanet and Resistance 2.
