Because it is a very pretty exclusive game. I could almost buy all the other "reasons" for it to be hyped, but it has been hyped since thefirst trailer was released. People saw pretty graphics and figured the game must be the next big thing.
Killzone was good (taking into account the PS2's capabilities with regard to FPS games). Killzone 2 will be amazing. 
Alot of the hype is the "anti-hype" as well. Personally, I don't care too much about this game or Resistance 2. Give me WKC, FF XIII (yes, I'm getting the Japanese version), FF VS XIII, and LBP.

Kyros pretty much nailed it. I never played Killzone 1, but Killzone Liberation was pretty good.
Halo-killer is a term coined by some early press on Killzone 1. Nobody thinks Killzone will be a Halo killer. I don't care about Halo.

Kill Zone 2 = A game that is 5 to 6 months away. It is not worth talking about at the moment, a lot of great games are coming out in 2008 to look forward to and to hype up. Wait until there is under a month to hype up the game.

well of course most of the talk is about r2 and lbp becuase they are coming out sooner
also it isnt just diehard fans why do u think major gaming sites are frequently releasing articles on it wow u cant just reduce hype on a game to fans becuase thats it what hype is fans getting exited about a game

The game looks awesome, and apparently plays awesome as well
The mp looks really good with its class system and it looks like it will be a great cinematic gaming experience

To lavish praise upon this title, the assumption of a common plateau between player and game must be made. I won't open my unworthy mouth.
killzone2 looks better than any game on wii and 360 combined, the grafix are absolutly stagering and its not even completed yet. killzone 2 is set to deliver a spectacular theater of war, with an even more spectacular online multiplayer experince sort of akin to team fortress. just check the gameplay videos it looks stunning. previews have been very positive and it a day one purchase for me. i dont think kilzones 2 grafix will be beaten this gen.
...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...
