Forums - Sales - Does Wii Sports Have a Shot at the All-Time Software Crown?

The only question at the moment really is if it remains bundled. At current sales trends, we can count on the Wii selling more than those 40.24m only in Europe and America, and this reaches to beat Super Mario Bros. But maybe Nintendo will pack in Wii Fit someday instead of Wii Sports, which I personally hope for, because that would mean Wii Sports would be sold seperately in the west and nobody could come and say "hm it looks like 40m people are playing it, but let's just not count it because I can't buy it anywhere, ok?" anymore.

Wii Fit pack in is very unlikely as it would have to include the scale thingy. Hoping that they keep the enormously "underdeveloped" WiiSports as a pack in is foolish. Hopefully they put a much better game in, like Wii Sports 2 that is fully developed and not so much a tech demo of the hardware. I won't get a Wii anytime soon, but eventually, and hopefully by then there is something better, or nothing at all for a much cheaper price.

Folks, use the freakin' world sales list on this site. Its under World >> Software at the top of the page.

Edit: I just discovered that the link i posted is fairly old, and that by combining the sales of Pokemon, Red; Blue, & Yellow that game has sold 20 million. If you list each individually (as should be the case none break 11 million)

Do you buy all version or just 1?

The pokemon games have always been the exact same games except for the availabilty of different pokemon on different colored versions. As crazy as it sounds, I have know many people to purchase more than one color in order to get specific pokemon.

That being the case the game should be broken down into three seperate games in order to tally sales.

Wii Sports definitely has the possibility of surpassing Super Mario, if and only if it remains a pack-in for quite sometime.

Here's an interesting question. Is the Wii processor/GPU on 90nm technology? If so, once they reach 65nm technology, they will be able to cut the price without removing Wii Sports. This could mean you get the same exact thing at $199.99 come sometime next year when Wii's are finally available on shelves. Then they wouldn't have to remove Wii Sports, and the chances of it staying a pack-in would remain high.

I still think Wii Sports II has a better chance - although it may not be released until 2009.

Just like the with Brain Training games - the sequel is selling better, and overtook the first quite quickly.

Once Wii Sports II comes out, more people in Japan will be likely to buy 'II' rather than 'I'. Also depends on what happens to the pack-in status.

...

If the Wii sells 30m in the US (lifetime), and 20m in Europe - that's 50m sales right there.

I think that Nintendo would be selling themselves short if they released Wii Sports 2 as a pack in, considering your suggestion that sequels sell better.

They would certainly make more money if they kept Wii Sorts as the pack in and sold the seqel seperately.

I agree completely with you. It will act like a "free sample" of the sequel and can boost even more sales...

But how many brought just 1 version.

mario bros always sold bundled in America without concerning the new marios bros games (2 and 3) maybe some bundled of mbros 2 and 3 but the majority always was mario bros bundled, wii sports could always be a bundled and make 40 or 60 millions without concerning wii sports 2 or 3.

but if nintendo want to make many million sellers could pack-in some nintendo and 3rd party games like sony with the ps1 and ps2, the psone model pack-in many games and the ps2 slim too, this is a great strategy to have tons of million sellers.

I don't think that there will be a Wii Sports 2, or if there is it will be a totally different level of game. Wii Sports is just a very fun tech demo and tutorial -- why would it need an update?

I think that Nintendo might unbundle the game from the Wii just to keep Super Mario Bros.' record intact. Otherwise, Wii Sports will probably stand for decades as the all time best selling game.

Who wants that?
