Forums - Sales - Does Wii Sports Have a Shot at the All-Time Software Crown?

One of our posters brough up the 'crazy' concept of Mario Galaxy taking a run at Super Mario Brother, the all-time top selling video game. While that's unlikely, it got me thinking about a different game that may have a chance at that number, Wii Sports. Here's the big target...

Name Console Publisher Japan America Others Total
Super Mario Bros Nintendo 6.81 29.52 3.91 40.24

No other game has ever come close to this total, obviously due to the bundling of Super Mario with the NES. For the same reason, Wii Sports has an outside chance of reaching the same level of sales. Here's where it currently stands...

Wii Sports Nintendo 1.79 3.64 2.42 7.85

Nearly 8 million sales in 8 months, and great sales legs due to the bundling. Now IF Nintendo keeps bundling Wii Sports with their console, we could potentially see these numbers getting close about 2-3 years from now. Do you think there's a realistic chance of this taking place... or is this just a crazy scenario that will never even come close

My Website

End of 2008 totals: Wii 42m, 360 24m, PS3 18.5m (made Jan. 4, 2008)

Well, since it is a bundle, it'd be more impressive if it overcome other bundled software (specifically, I am thinking of Tetris) Of course, I might be wrong on the numbers, so feel free to correct me.

Edit: And yes, I know it's not bundled in Japan.

I am a PC gamer, and also have a NDS now, but without access to a Nintendo Wii until End of 2007.

Currently playing: Super Smash Brothers Brawl(Wii), Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer(DS), Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime (DS), WiiFit(Wii)

Games Recently Beaten: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King (Normal; Very Hard after the next DLCs become available)

1 word: RTFA

Mario was bundled in America right? I guess the numbers speak for themselves.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

I'd say it's all but gauranteed. I think a more interesting question would be will it be the all time best seller in Japan where it is obviously not a pack-in.

My guess, without doing too much research, is no and that a DS title will own that spot, not sure which one though!

Grow up and stop trolling.

Yeah, Mario was bundled too, So I dont see how Wiisports being bundled could disqualify it. It has a chance, if they dont change the bundle throughout the lifetime of the console.

I think the answer is "yes" due largely to Europe/"others." Wii Sports should many times SMB's 3.91 million in "others," while in Japan and America, its hard to tell if Wii Sports will reach their much more impressive SMB totals.

With Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Nintendogs (& Wii sequel?), at least 2 iterations of Brain Age, NSMB and Galaxy, Pokemon D/P + 3rd game, Animal Crossing DS and Wii, Mario Kart DS and Wii, Brawl, Halo 3 and future Bungie projects, GT5 and 6, multiple GTAIV iterations, PC games like WoW and its expansions, StarCraft II and Spore, plus any breakout hits of the next 4 or 5 years, the top of the all-time best-sellers list is going to be completely rewritten this gen. Before this gen, only about 30-35 titles had ever reached the 8 million mark in sales, and there could easily be 20 such games from this gen alone.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Well, let's see, Wii sports is bundled everywhere except for Japan. It definitely has a chance since the worstcase scenario for Wii is that it won't exceed the Gamecubes sales in any region. If so, at least 32 million copies should be sold. Since we're optimistic (totaly by chance ;) ) i foresee a new record in five years time .

Deep into the darkness pearing

Long i stood there

Wondering

Fearing

Doubting.

The only thing that would stop Wii Sports from topping SMB is if Nintendo decided to stop packing it in.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

The only question at the moment really is if it remains bundled. At current sales trends, we can count on the Wii selling more than those 40.24m only in Europe and America, and this reaches to beat Super Mario Bros. But maybe Nintendo will pack in Wii Fit someday instead of Wii Sports, which I personally hope for, because that would mean Wii Sports would be sold seperately in the west and nobody could come and say "hm it looks like 40m people are playing it, but let's just not count it because I can't buy it anywhere, ok?" anymore.

Currently Playing: Skies of Arcadia Legends (GC), Dragon Quest IV (DS)

Last Game beaten: The Rub Rabbits(DS)

The real question is will any non-bundled Wii title be able to overcome the sales totals for Super Mario 3?
18 Million plus makes it the best selling non-bundled game to date. In fact looking at the link below shows that it is the only non-bundled title to break 14 million. (Mario Land was bundled with the game boy.

Tetris for Gameboy was bundled and sold 33 Million.

Food for thought.

Edit: I just discovered that the link i posted is fairly old, and that by combining the sales of Pokemon, Red; Blue, & Yellow that game has sold 20 million. If you list each individually (as should be the case none break 11 million)
