I also think you're being a douchebag, so maybe let's just stop it here. |
respecting an opinion and not caring for what i think are two different things

I don't have a problem with your opinion bro. I do, however, think a lot of people give incorrect opinion on a game. By incorrect, I mean they played half the game, and were confused/pissed off at the game for some reason. I feel that if they went into the game in their normal hyped state of mind, then they would love for the awesome game it was.
Virtually every game that I consider great, I know has greatness in it. However, I don't get upset when people flame those games. I just know that they didn't have the right experience with the game. It's not that they didn't like it. It's that the game never had the chance to show them what it had to offer. FFXII, Vagrant Story, FFVIII, FFT, PW, Radiant Dawn. A lot of these games are simply amazing, however it takes a long, confusing, and arduious task to find said greatness.
FFXII should never be played without a rather large and dauting wall of text walkthrough or two, and a powerleveling technique that starts at minute 1 of the game. FFVIII should only be played after a 30ish hour dry run of the game where you explore the draw and limit break systems. People have beaten entire 60 hour games and never understood exactly how to play them. That knowledge that you are ignorant of a lot of the things in the game, will really eat on you, and make the game harder and less enjoyable.
Half-Life 2 is one of those "hard to get into" type of games. You need to be hyped to play it. You can't go into it with a cynical attitude or it will never hook you.
If it does hook you, it'll make a believer out of you. Trust me, your opinion is fine, but just because you didn't like it, doesn't mean that the game isn't factually fantastic. It just means that you didn't get the average experience out of it, because of one or several X factors. Some games(FFXII) make that X factor something that most gamers will actually have, and thus many fans would dislike the game because they share that common factor(of not being able to understand a hugely complex game that you're just thrown into, on top of it having a weak story). However, gamers that are able to overcome that factor, know what the game has to offer.
So yes, I respect your opinion, but I also know how you arrived at it. I was once where you were. I know your exact state of mind and your exact feelings about the game, but I also know the truth about the game that you have yet too, and indeed may never discover.
You know when you see some kid trying to fool his mother with a trick that you used to pull, and you know it's complete BS, because you used to to it all the time, but you wouldn't have realized it if you hadn't been there yourself?
That's you, too me, on this. I've been there with Half-Life and HL2. Hated em both. Hated FFXII, VIII, FFTactics, Disgaea, Vagrant Story, Ninja Gaiden, Okami, Gears of War. You know what I did? Months later, I went back and game them a second play with a different state of mind, and the confusing ones with a walkthrough(because it was their last chance). Now I love the hell out of every one of those games, and I know more about how the people who claim they hate them "because they're bad" feel. I've been there. I know where they're at, and I'm past them. Others are past me. It's the circle of life.
So yeah man. /respect. I've been there. Go back at it with a different attitude one day when you're bored, and you'll probably look back on yourself and say, "I can't believe I said this game sucked, lol." I've done it....a LOT.
