Forums - Nintendo - DS and PSP sales compared...

The PSP is selling about 500,000 units a month. The Nintendo DS is selling about 500,000 units a week! The DS is on task to sell 100 million by March. If the PSP keeps at the current average- which is actually very good, it will be around 42 million. That would give Nintendo a market share of 70.4%. Will this actually be the case in March? We'll see, but it is VERY amazing that the PSP would sell 42 million, and NOT be the number 1 portable! I would NEVER have believed anyone who would have quoted those numbers back in 2003. I can't believe the DS will surpass the GBA in less than 4 years! Let alone sell 100 million systems! Sony is on pace to sell 100 million PSP's by 2013. By that point the DS will have reached 130 million easily, could even top 150 million by then!, but in 2013, the DS will be 9, and that's how long the original GB lasted, so it could have a successor then.

Okay people, I need to show you people BASIC Math. 4 x 125,000 (what PSP is AVERAGING weekly according to VG) is 500,000. Looking at 450,000 is about 500,000 (what DS is AVERAGING weekly). Taking 500,000 a month means that's 6 million a year (world wide sales averages for PSP) taking the count during the down months- summer. Taking a look at how many they've been averaging since its March 2005 American debut, 3.5 years for those who can't do Math, the Japan launch was negligable in total worldwide sales at this point, so it's average is 10.9 a year, which includes Christmas when sales JUMP. So, it's averaging nearly 11 million a year since its debut. It will probably keep at this average, slightly increasing after Nintendo totally saturates the market with the DS. Now, taking 11 million a year, and knowing it WILL reach 40 million here shortly, means it WILL cross 50 million next year. Now, adding 44 million to that for the next 4 years after next year adds to... 94 million in the year 2013. Sheesh, HOW can so many of you people NOT know BASIC Math??? Sony obviously keeps their systems alive a VERY long time, and in 2013, the PSP will be 9, meaning it WILL live to see 2014- the year it WILL pass 100 million if it didn't sooner. MATH NEVER LIES! I just can't believe how many of you can not do Math, oh I feel for this country's future...

I dont think the psp will manage to sell 100 million units

This is like saying: "Kia Spectra and Lamborghini Diablo 1/4 mile run compared"

Not even a contest.

Mmm ,actually after shipments figures Sony had shipped 41 million PSP back in july when they gave numbers at the E3.I think the PSP is considerably undertracked (some 2-3 million ) in vgchartz.Still ,its true the DS is selling a lot more ,specially now that in the wait for the PSP3000 the actual PSP sales are fading ...we will see what happens when the PSP3000 arrives.

diomedes, werent you the first that always complained about nintendo putting the DSLite out, and now you seem quite entusiatic about sony releasing its third psp model.... ironic.

DS: Monster

Enough said for the DS.

As for the PSP, I think its selling very well. Take into account its going up against something thats been in the business for years. Once it reaches the 100 dollar mark it will sell like crazy, not as the DS but crazy enough to be called crazy.

DS:155million
PSP:80million

My predictions for LTS.

The PSP won't get to 100mil, and the DS could get a price cut or new model within a year to boost sales even more.

I know quite a few ppl w PSPs
I don't know anyone that buys PSP games though :p

Is Sony finally making money when they sell PSPs?

DS is killing PSP.

But PSP is the best sellign Non-nintendo handheld ever. Also, it's the best second place system of all time.

Two things to be quite excited about for Sony's first foray into the handheld market, facing Nintendo's 20 years in the market.

I'm pretty happy for what Sony accomplished.

@PDF: Why?

If Nintendo manages another revolutioning system like DS was, I don't think Sony's portable could come closer. Sony has to make something new if they want to, but you are giving Sony too much credit and discrediting Nintendo for platforms that we don't even need to think about now. Also, games. Nintendo has shown everyone this gen that they have the games most of the people seem to want. It's true Sony managed that the previous 2 gens, but Nintendo is going too strong now and building up new franchises that will be highly recognized in the future.
