The most eagerly awaited games coming to the DS, the most popular system in the world at this moment in time, have all been Square-Enix games.

Your statement is not true. There were a lot of games that were more anticipated than the Square-Enix games and have had better sales. Just look at the sales data collected by VGChartz.

I think Square is important because they have popular RPG IPs, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Dragon Quest. These RPG IPs can do in Japan what Madden and GTA do for consoles in the West, Increase console sales. Actually Square's RPGs sale very well in the West also. Remember there are very few western rpg developers that develop for consoles. Most western rpg developers are more interested in the MMO market. Thus Japanese rpg developers have dominated the console market. This is why Square, Level 5, Namco, Monolith, and any Japanese rpg developer is important.

To put that in simplier terms, even though a couple of WRPGs have been smash hits on consoles, that is not enough to replace JRPG developers as dominant on consoles.  JRPGs are more successful overall than WRPGs.  Sounds suprising but not as suprising as you think.  This is because JRPGs while they are a complex genre in themselves, are still more accessible than the even more indepth WRPGs.

And they almost all tell better stories as well.

My most anticipated games:  Whatever Hideo Kojima is going to do next, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Alan Wake, Wii Sports Resort.  Cave Story Wiiware.

To all saying FF is the most important RPG series
Then what is Pokemon, a serie that generally sell +15 millions?

"No. In fact, Square-Enix could disappear off the face of the Earth and I wouldn't care at all. All they're doing these days is shoving out remakes and generic RPGs with battle systems that could be faithfully reproduced on an SNES."

That's odd. I thought Star Ocean IV, The Last Remnant, Final Fantasy XIII, Kingdom Hearts III, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Final Fantasy XIII Agito, Star Ocean 1, Dragon Warrior V and DQ VI were all new games (the last three at least new here in America).

What consoles have they appeared on previously?

You mean JRPGs tell better stories than WRPGs or vice versa?

If the former, I'll be shocked since many of the people I talk to here think that WRPGs have the better stories overall.

no fckn way ! square enix titles are not important at all.....
1:FF9

2:FF 10
3:FF tactics (gba)
4:FF 10-2

the above games were the best...i seek no interest in new square enix games again

"Hopefully nr 13 will fix that but the longer it takes for it to come out the more worried I get... FF12 took what 5 years to make? and it turned out real bad."

See my previous comments on this. Tell me what are your credentials for being properly able to judge these games are if the only one you've ever even played through to the end is XII.

That's like saying Wuthering Heights was awful because you don't like gothic novels that actually duplicate British dialects from the era in which they were written or saying I hate all Henry James' novels.  My teacher asked me to read one, and  I skimmed the first page and think everything he ever wrote sucks. Now, I'm going to get back to riding my skate board. When most critics of literature consider both Emily Bronte and Henry James to be excellent writers and you have no basis upon which to judge their works.

First: The vast majority of JRPGs are hardly complex. Most of them just involve trudging along the path to a set story and getting in some easy random battles on the way. The small minority of actually challenging JRPGs out there (the Megaten games come to mind) aren't even popular.

Second: Most JRPG stories are terrible, and they're told terribly. Tons and tons... and tons... and tons... of non-interactive text and cutscenes. Your average WRPG can at least tell a story competently - through branching dialogue trees, for example - even if the story itself isn't that great.

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

Final Fantasy PEAKED at VI, so no it's not important anymore. Final Fantasy VII only sold on shock value. "Oh my god, a 3-D Final Fantasy not on a Nintendo Console? The world is ending!"

Then why did FFVIII and FFX sell 8M+

Also, FFIX, X-2 and XII with 5M+ is hardly poor sales

FFXIII will sell at least 7M on the PS3/360

Because games can sell purely on name and not quality. Seriously, the FF games over the last, what, 10 years have sucked pretty hard. They only sell because people think they're supposed to think they're awesome.

Are you actually saying that ff 8,9 and 10 and 12 sucked? Compared to what? just a week a ago i tried space siege, now that sucked, even dungeon siege sucked, diablo got boring fast, and the only good tolkien-esc game that is good is oblivion.

You are either ignorant or too one sided, cuz those final fantasy games are leagues ahead of the vast majority of games.

Well, IX was good but I'm pretty sure that was an accident.

  • VIII - worst of the whole series. The story wasn't anything special and I'm sure Keanu Reeves would do a wonderful job playing the part of Squall.
  • X - It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. I never really felt anything for the characters, the story wasn't anything special at all, and all in all the game just really wasn't that memorable.
  • XII - Almost as bad as VIII. People keep telling me it gets better the further you get into it but I've tried it on two seperate occasions and stopped at about 16 or so hours both times because I just couldn't take anymore. The story was terrible and the characters were just so bad.

You didn't find FFX memorable in anyway. Believe me, a lot of people are going to hate you as many consider FFX to be one of the Best post VII FF games.

That really isn't saying much.

Not to sound like an ass, at least hopefully not, but your last post on VIII, X and XII was just a longer version of his comment that you bolded; An opinion.  The only difference is that a lot of people did indeed buy FFX.  There are obviously people that rent games before purchasing them.

This will only take a moment of your time. *steals your watch*

On a side note - I find it funny that a thread like this pops up after Square Enix decides to go multi-plat with this title.

Anywho, I've thought for years that Final Fantasy has lost it's touch. They keep changing the game so much that it's not Final Fantasy anymore. It's a completely different RPG every time they release it. The title, to me, has lost all relevance as a dominant RPG.
