Forums - Sales - PS3 gets it's First JRPG in Japan This Week -Predictions for HW & SW - 22/9

A little better than my original prediction but it still bombed as it should.

Not so good first day, guess it wont be over 50k first week.

So about 40K first week. The hype died for this game then.

It's rather unlikely that it'll sell 40k first week. JRPGs rarely get 2x multipliers on their first day. Eternal Sonata on X360 sold around 35k on launch day, and only managed another 12k afterwards.

PS3 games tend to have better legs in Japan than 360 games though. I think Afrika did just under double first day sales, for first week. So I was going by that.

Eternal Sonata definitely underwhelmed.

35k max. 30-32k likely.

So is it not even worth buying for JRPG fans on a console starved of them??

This is a serious question as I am thinikng of buying it...

Are you asking me this as a gamer, or asking a retorical question about the Japanese market?

As an owner of Eternal Sonata, I'm rather mixed on how to answer "should I buy it?".

As a X360 owner, I can honestly say there are about 3-4 JRPGs available that are better than Eternal Sonata (on the 360). I bought it full priced ($60) and enjoyed the game quite a bit (I'd personally rate if a 7.75 to an 8), but it has it's inherant flaws - of which, I really doubt a PS3 version was/is going to fix. The dialogue (at least for the English version) has to be the WORST I've ever seen. The ending doesn't make sense, and about 1/2 of the way through, your confused about WTF is even going on.

But it does have it's bright points - the graphics are gorgeous, and if you have an HDTV, they are the best graphics of almost any available RPG. The combat is pretty good, and the game isn't as flawed as the other available PS3 JRPG - Enchanted Arms (also a X360 game I have beaten).

If your REALLY starved for a JRPG...And you don't like/don't want Disagea 3 or Valkyria Chronicles, I'd say consider it. If you have a friend to play with (in my case, my fiancee), it DOES make for great fun, as the game is 3 player offline co-op in battles.

The next question is: What did the Playstation 3 version add? I know there's more story and such to it. You'd really have to ask someone that's played (and beat) both the PS3 and X360 versions to know exactly what you'd get with Eternal Sonata on PS3.

I was asking as a serious gamer who is a fan of JRPG's and is starved of them ATM....n thanks very much for the response....2 lines in your reply have made it a definite pruchase!

Thanks again!

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

I still don't know how some people expected 120k 1st week...full priced year old port, game was not well received critically, the competing console is the talk of the moment now and the hip thing to buy, the competing console already has this JRPG along with a couple of better just released JRPGs. I expected 20k 1st week.

Yeah. The 3 Player Co-Op (for battles) definately makes it quite fun. Not as good (imo) as Tales of Vesperias' co-op, but still very good, as Namco did a great job on that aspect of ES.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Wow.

This is disappointing.

I guess the "PS3 can sell JRPG's it just needs a chance to prove itself" has gone out the window now.

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

history has shown time and time again games don't sell more than their counterparts for timed exclusive. I said this in another thread.

read what both fila and i have said. anyone who expected this to sell more was simply fooling themselves. want proof? - http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=13325®ion=All - http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=14180®ion=All - 220k is long ways away with those numbers.... (wasn't the 360 suppose to sell 1m according to you 360 fanboys because of the way larger install base {especially in america} with 360 fans loving shooters?)
