Forums - Sony - If Apple joins the game console business, will Sony leave?

when sony entered the market there was some really bad competition...
this competition is fierce. sure they can learn from ms' mistakes but, i'm sorry no, not with nintendo.
A big selling point actually for nintendo is the color and size. They did a lot of research in coming up with the design, and it fits some of the exact same reasons why ipod, imac were so popular.
Form over function is a huge thing when it comes to similar products.
nintendo has both the best form and most innovative function.
Those are both Apple's strongest areas.
In fact I wouldn't have been surprised if some apple people designed the wii and controller.

blue ocean is key to apple success, nintendo capitalized off it already so it's now a red ocean, or for nintendo, a green ocean.

Apple has $20 billion in cash and has over 20 years of selling computing hardware. They will probably make an interesting console with great online components and be willing to sell at a loss to their huge fan base. Anything with the letter "I" seems to sell for them from I pods to I phones. Will Sony be willing to go another round against both Apple and Microsoft seeing that both those companies have tons more cash to burn than Sony does at the moment? They were the big dog against Nintendo and Sega in 1995 but the tables have turned now if Apple joins the race.

Apple already had its run in the console business.  They supplied the MacOS 8 to Bandai's Pippin over 10 years again.  It failed.  And why would you want SONY to leave the market if Apple did get into the console market now?  Are they bothering you?

No as MS learned it takes many years to build up a new and loyal fanbase. Sony and Ninetnedo have huge ones and MS is growing it very nicely though it cost billions and almost 10 years.

Sony isnt going anywhere

Just cause MS can ineptly force their way into the industry with money and marketing doesn't mean it has to be like that for everyone.

Sony went from nothing to 1st with the original Playstation over the dominate Nintendo and stiff Sega competition.

If Apple had a novel, inticing product and reads the market correctly they can enter easily without lossing money.

The consle market has changed since Sony came in and swept everyone away with the PS, the competation is much fiercer than last time, there is no way Apple could just come in without losing money at first

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

I don't see the connection.

But anyway is Apple really likely to enter into the console business? It seems like a huge risk to take. With MP3 players there was no real risk as there was a gap in the market. There were more advanced MP3 players than ipods but there was no really cool looking device. Even till today many many years after ipod came out other companies are still struggling to make mp3 players that come anywhere as close to being as cool looking as ipods. Likewise there was a gap in the mp3 player/mobile phone market. Nokia phones such as the new N95 have 8gb storage and play mp3s but they are anything but cool looking. Likewise imacs look cook while pcs generally don't. With a console there is no real gap in the market (there are already 3 giants making very good products there) and it will not be able to sell only on the basis of having a cool looking console (maybe a portable to compete with psp and DS but cool looking won't be enough to help a console).

No it isn't its a huge success. This is finally and absolutely true with the release of the 3G iPhone.

...

Doesn't mean that they will enter the home console business though. Sony, Nintendo and even MS would eat them for breakfast. Why? Apple sucks at working with other companies. Its ok when they have the complete control as in iPhone Apps and games etc. but they would never be able to do the same butt-kissing and support that is neccessary to get game developers to do games for your new and unproven platform the others do.

Sony went from getting a bunch of R&D and launch ideas from Nintendo to first. They also hired Ken Kutargi from Nintendo after the SNES CD plans fell through. Sure they were never on the market but they went full steam after they had a few coals stuffed in their oven. As opposed to phillips which tried to create a god awful hybrid system.

Apple is not a god company they do have one of the best marketing business out there and it is good to see them revived after the 90's but their presence in any market does not guarentee success.

No, Sony wouldn't quit cause of Apple.

The Playstation name is way bigger than the "i" name Apple has when it comes to gaming.

Also Apple would have to work hard and spend money to get 3rd party support. And they'd need some good exclusive IP's to give you a reason to buy the console. Some people will buy it based on brand name, but most people will look at the games and say sony has way more selection than Apple.

Also i GUARENTEE PS4 does better than PS3 cause Sony has learned their mistake. There is no way in hell they release a console for more than $400 next gen to start.
