Forums - Gaming - id's RAGE gimped to accomodate the Xbox 360

This is what I hate about the net sometimes. Stories are writen and are taken out of context of what was said just so that there websites can get bigger hits. Anyone who would have thought for a second must have had a little problem with him saying how the game was gimped lol I mean come on thats really shooting yourself in the foot, then to blame one system because of it lol well thats taken even more sales away. Im sure some people will say that this is damage controll and all the rest of it but come on just think for a sec even if they did leave stuff out to make it the same across all systems then you would advertise the fact would you lol.

He also mentioned in an interview that they had to work twice as hard with the PS3 version just to bring it up to par with the 360... Maybe if they'd put that effort into the 360 version instead, the 360 version would be even better. So in a way the PS3 gimped the 360 version.

See, I can do the same thing...

No, you can't.  Because you have no proof that the PS3 being harder to work with directly affected or affects the XBox360 build.  But here we have the developers themselves stating that the XBox360's media of choice is a limiting factor for the game across all platforms.

Right, so you're saying workload and quality are not connected. The PS3 demanding twice the workload of the 360 is increasing the workload on the whole project, since the different versions of the game are NOT being created by disjoint teams, since they're working on the SAME game (or do you want to argue with me on this?). Since the PS3 is increasing the workload on the project as a whole, quality will be affected negatively.

As I read it they're clearly stating that for high content volume games:

PC = best due to large HDD (pretty obvious really)

PS3 = next best due to 25GB or so BR

360 = third due to 6 to 8 GB DVD

Also while nothing was cut from the final design its also clear from his words than the final design involved some design decisions based on 360 being the lowest common denominator - i.e.

The conclusion - without mandatory HDD 360 needs multiple disks for games that would be single disk on PS3 or install on PC.

Is that really so surprising? This was the same when PS3/360 launched. One has a smaller maximum disk storage than the other.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

they changed design to decrease the amount of loading.

The problem is that in future, when the IP from Sony start to ocupy all the space avaible, the 3rd parties will start to look bad. That´s not good for the 3r neither Sony, so, as ps3 gathers user base, we gonna start to see games thta are limmited to ps3 because of content. This already happenned with GTA IV, or you think TT didn´t make a wii version the biggest user base avaible, because they are stupid? If the games strat to look small because of space, that will hurt gamers loyalty. Like a guy above said, if FFXIII is smaller and less Awesome than people expect, you can bet they will blame the x360 port. And I don´t crave FF, but the ones that do will garantee that ther will be blood.

FU for trying to squeeze don't gimp my game put it on a few disk i don't give a crap, as long as the game is good i don't mind swapping out a disk, i grew up playing games that had me do that i don't mind at all, in fact back when that was going on it was bragging rights, what your still only on disk two man i am on four already.....geeze

You know, in the end, we're arguing over a company who hasn't developed or published a truly great game for almost 10 years. Doom 3 sucked, Quake 4 sucked, RTCW sucked, ET:QW sucked. They can talk about "gimped" games all they want, but my hopes for this title were really low in the first place.

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

Doesn't change the fact that they're gimping the game.

Game gimping better not become a trend.

And don't even try a PS2/Xbox analogy, because at this point, it's a pure STORAGE issue, and the PS2 and Xbox both used DVDs

You mean 'less loading on 360' - he clearly states 'mostly due to 360...'.  I couldn't care either way but its clear that in this case DVD / no HDD meant design changes that would not have been required on a PC / PS3 due to greater space availability and guaranteed HDD.

Its really not worth trying to spin this positive when it isn't - not that it's glaringly negative either.  Look on the bright side, PS3 had to trade of faster (average) drive speed for BR vs DVD... so I guess what ID are really saying is that this will look/play best on a PC.

id: Rage Not Cut Because of Xbox 360 Limits

Sep 16, 2008 10:40pm CST tags: Rage

The limitations of the DVD medium and Xbox 360 hardware have not forced id to cut content from all versions of Rage (PC, PS3, 360), the studio has told Shacknews.

Following a report that id had removed "significant content" from all versions of the shooter so the game would fit onto two Xbox 360 DVDs, id Software's Tim Willits denied that the Xbox 360 version required the studio to sacrifice its vision for the game.

"There was NO CONTENT removed from RAGE because of the 360--NONE AT ALL," wrote Willits. "We feel the 360 is a great platform and will provide a fantastic Rage experience."

id has previously stated that the Xbox 360 version of Rage will look worse than its PC and PS3 counterparts due to the limitations of the DVD medium. The studio had hoped to circumvent this by spreading the 360 release across three DVDs, though Microsoft's royalty rates apparently make anything beyond two discs financially impracticable.

Willits' unedited response follows:

During my talk today I mentioned that we originally wanted to have around 5 or 6 smaller wasteland environments but later decided instead to have 2 larger wastelands. Mostly because we were going to be shipping on two DVDs for the 360 and felt that it would play better with one large wasteland on each disc so there would be no loading between wastelands. Not loading levels while you drive around is a much better decision regardless of platform.

There was NO CONTENT removed from RAGE because of the 360--NONE AT ALL. Moving from multiple wastelands into fewer but larger wastelands was a far better decision and is actually giving us more gameplay in the game.

We feel the 360 is a great platform and will provide a fantastic Rage experience.

So while it's reassuring to hear that no content has actually been removed from the game due size constraints (after all, degrading the graphical quality on the Xbox 360 is enough of a knock on DVDs), it's interesting that a multiplatform game's story and pacing is being dictated by one console's technical specifications.

In other words....gimped. They had an original vision, and had to alter it due to the 360s tech specs.....Thanks M$
