Forums - Gaming - id's RAGE gimped to accomodate the Xbox 360

There is so much bad in this interview it's not even funny. I have a feeling that ID software is trying to pin Microsoft to the wall over this by talking publicly about it. However, telling the fanbase for this game that it's confirmed "gimped" from the start is going to do nothing more than alienate fans from all platforms. Microsoft cannot change the fact that the 360 plays DVDs. What's done is done. ID needed to adapt to this situation before starting Rage and seeing whether the 360 was the right platform for this game. Obviously it wasn't. However, money talks, and ID thinks they need the userbase to sell. We had the same problems in the last gen when it was flipped around and games needed to be gimped on the Xbox and Gamecube because publishers needed that PS2 userbase.

I know how this well end up though. Microsoft is going to get the blame for this. It will be their fault that ID feels forced into developing for them, forced to sacrifice their game's integrity, forced to fit a square peg into a round hole. If this were taken a step further, and ID felt they needed the Wii's userbase for this game, and had the game refitted on all platforms to accomodate the Wii, would it then be Nintendo's fault? ID is making a game that does not belong on the 360 in it's prefered form, and it's ID's fault that they are making it for the 360 because of this, not Microsoft's.

Quick question though for those knowledgeable. Don't PC games also come out on DVDs? If they do then why aren't they also part of the problem?

because pc's all have hard drives, making it easier for digital distribution, whilst some xbox 360's don't have hardrives which would make it unfair for them if id released part of the game as a download.

This is why all HD consoles need to burn and stop functioning. Because of either their a) hardware b)controls or c)player abilities, many PC games suffer. This is the spring of my hatred towards all things PS3 r 360. Worthless PC wannabes.

P.S. If anyone says that only Xbox 360 affects PC with crap like this, I call that and raise you an Unreal Tournament 3. Great franchise turned to shit because of consoles.

^ How did consoles do that? Wouldn't it be the developers just failing?

@Squilliam

Ill give you the whole Developers put in as much effort as the budget allows bit. But that does not mean that they are not still lazy. The PS3's cell architecture is rarely even used in Multiplatform games. This is why the games suffer's for the format. They rarely even bother to make their games use 2 of the cell, you can forget 6 cells. All I ask for is a equal playing ground. If you have the time to go int othe 360's specs to fully utilize them, if you want me to buy your game you do the same damn thing for the PS3.

Greatness Awaits

PSN:Forevercloud (looking for Soul Sacrifice Partners!!!)

Or they could just gimp the 360 version, oh wait it's the version that's actually going to sell and make the game profitable. A lot of games last generation were gimped to play on the PS2, it's what typically happens when one system becomes dominant (as the 360 is for FPS).

Of course I'm sure this gimping is going to shave a decent some cost of the games development and help get it to market quicker, funny how that turns out isn't it?

I don't see how it's developers failing. id is doing what they can outside of throwing more money into M$'s face. You have to remember that if anyone can optimize a system's hardware it would be Carmack and his team. UT3 was gimped because PS3 and iI guess soon the XBOX360 crowd are used to FPS games that are slow with horrible controls and weapon mechanics. If UT3 was anything like UT2004 then it would be unplayable by most players on consoles save the ones that are the most experienced, and even then I doubt they would enjoy it that much. There's just things you can do with a PC that you can't do with a controller easily(example: double jumping while strafing and having a dead on aim on a target at the same). Also FPS games on consoles feel like molasses compared to Quake and UT on the PC. It's not developers failing, it's consoles creating restrictions.

 How did controls for a console mess up the controls to a PC?

Many game mechanics were altered between UT2004 and UT3 and many of those were so they could acommodate the console crowds. Weapons were changed, speed was changed, even though the PS3 versin is still 30% slower than the PC version, and some may argue this but double jumping/dodging was also removed. Overall it felt even less fun than the original UT which came out back in '98. It just had newer shinier surfaces. Most people that I know who played either competatively or were part of the more skilled crowd are still playing UT2004. Also the best place where you can see how controls affected the PC version is the menu. When it launched the menus in UT3 were a joke, huge lettering, you have to scrol through pages of crap to get to what you want. no UTWindows no nothing. Sensitivity was only by integers (PC gamers likee their mouse sesitivity to be perfect) and there were basically no video options visible. You had to go to the .ini file and change the options from there to actually play the game the way you wanted it. Unacceptable, and all because of the PS3 and future Xbox360 versions.

Who would want to play a FPS on 4 discs? That's just a hassle.

The sad truth is that Id would be passing up on too much money if they made the 360 have that much less content than PC/PS3.
