Forums - Sony - Just How Big Are Sonys Pockets?

According to Jack Tretton, the PS2 has made $26 billion in the US alone, lets say it makes about the same amount in Europe and Japan total, and that equals $52 billion made from the PS2.

And yet the Playstation subsidary only accounts for 13% of the company as a whole (or so I read from somewhere on this forum).

Sony stocks are worth over double that of Microsofts stocks.

So, I ask the mathematicians of this forum, how much is Sony worth? And would Sony pour more money into the PS3 than Microsoft the 360. Would the 360 be lower piority for Microsoft atm, with low Vista demands, a strong Apple competitor (since the iPod, Mac OS has become more popular than ever), and a failing Zune. Especially seeing as the Xbox division has never been in profit, Microsoft want to have something to show for it soon.

If I was a betting man, I'd bet that 26 billion is in revenue.

If you dig up financial reports, it tells you Sony's financials across all of its divisions. I'm sure there are a few here who have the links. Sony has a lot of assets that make it worth a lot of money, but it also has a bit of debt on its hands. If it became a war on bigger pockets, Microsoft would win, hands down. I think Microsoft has bigger plans for the console market than just beating Sony. They are trying to decrease Sony's marketshare and grip on the living room.

63.980 billion revenue, but low income of $1.042 billion.

They are still recovering right now, their TV and movie business are doing great rignt now. They may be selling the financial arm of sony corp.

Had MS have competed with TiVo, I think they would have been in much more profit by now, and may even have greater marketshare (well it would, seeing as I think TiVo only really exists in the US, outside of the US it isn't that big - I don't know ANYONE with TiVo, and I've only ever seen one in a store).

Question: Just How Big Are Sonys Pockets?
Answer: Apparently not big enough to do what's necessary for the PS3 to outsell the competition, under the conditions they set for themselves.

I like to discuss numbers too, but that's the answer that matters the most. And as others pointed out, those big numbers are revenue and don't mean much. Last I heard, Sony had about 3 billion dollars in the bank and of course, more money in inventory and assets. I may be wrong though, I'm reciting from memory.

EDIT- updated stats:

Someone correct if I'm not reading it right:

Sony has 4.31 billion dollars in cash, and 9 billion in debt.

26 bln is probably over the ps2 lifetime, not annually.

also, microsoft is worth over 5 times sony. i have no idea where you came up with sony doubling microsoft.

the Wii is an epidemic.

On June 25th, Nintendo's market value recently surpassed Sony's.  Sony may be more well rooted than Nintendo with many different businesses, but they're not in an economically strong position compared with Nintendo.

For comparison:

Microsoft has 25.5 billion dollars in the bank, and a debt of... zero dollars. That means 6 times more money than Sony, and that's ignoring Sony's debt.

Cash: Microsoft > Nintendo > Sony

Revenue: Sony > Microsoft > Nintendo

Profit: Microsoft > Nintendo > Sony

Profit Margin: Microsoft > Nintendo > Sony

Growth: Nintendo > Microsoft > Sony

He was referring to the stock price, I believe, not the actual company worth.
