first off to answer th3 "where's the third party support?!?!?!?" question.
it wasn't until within the past couple months that we've seen 3rd parties (konami, capcom, square enix) really come out and say they are shifting their focus to the wii. games take time to develop. and i doubt that any of these multi-million dollar companies want to come out and show some half assed product.

I think Nintendo has been selling their consoles to mainly the Nintendo hardcore and the casuals but they aren't getting the other hardcore gamers which are going to the systems that dominate those kinds of games PS3 and 360.  I also think it'll be even harder for the Wii to get those gamers in the future because of games like Grand Theft Auto 4 and literally dozens of others that'll likely attract even more of those gamers to the 360 and PS3.  I think a lot of what you'll see from third parties for the Wii will be casual games, ported games with wii tacked on controls, and unique hardcore games that won't be on the 360 or PS3 because they likely wouldn't be able to compete or stand out like that will on the Wii.

Thanks Stof, I completely agree. And remember Nintendo has not stopped making Wii games at all.

They announced they are working on Kirby Wii and a from the ground up Wii Zelda a long time ago. Mario Sports games are already coming (Mario Strikers Charged) and I'm sure Starfox is on it's way. To add to that they are making Golden Sun Wii (the first time this amazing RPG has ventured into the 3D space), Fire Emblem Wii, Disaster Day of Crisis (a new IP, something that they didn't have many of last generation), Battalion Wars 2, Donkey Kong Barrel Blast, Endless Ocean (not sure wtf this one is), Project H.A.M.M.E.R. if it's not canceled, and so much more.

It's incredibly ridiculous to say Nintendo doesn't care about the hardcore gamer. They are making/have made 3 times as many hardcore games as casual games.

I'm gonna have to go on board and say Wii Fit is one of the best moves Nintendo's ever done. There are massive untapped markets, not only those who are into fad weight loss products, but in fitness freaks of all varieties. Yoga itself is an absolutely huge market, and I can see tons of people (most likely woman) buying a product that gives them interaction for things like yoga and light aerobics.

Video games used as fitness programs was inevitable and I think Nintendo is going to make a killing exploiting it first. Wii Fit is just a more interactive version of all the fitness video's people buy.

On top of that, if anyone actually supports outside of nintendo, it offers all sorts of possibilities for core games. Skateboarding/surfing/snowboarding, certain sports titles (though I can't think of specific examples), on rail FPS's ( Anyone ever played the rail shooter game Police 911?), racing games (use the board as pedals maybe?), the possibilities are there. Games only available in arcades with expensive machines could become possible on a console, similar to how dance dance revolution eventually showed up on consoles.

It's good for Nintendo since they make money off each console sold, but some of this stuff would be disasterous on a console in which money is lost on each console sold. I mean imagine selling a million consoles but only a game or two with each but needing 6-7 games to break even.

Also Legend. You're basing part of your theory on the anecdotal evidence of your family losing interest in the Atari and Nes. But a lot of people didn't. A significant portion of people who were introduced to gaming thanks to those console's market expanding nature stuck around and still play today.

We've got to stop saying nongamers. If they've started playing, they're new gamers.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

i have to humbly  disagree. to a point yes i can see that happening via what i like to call the bandwagon effect.

but already you have games like:

elebits
jack and wicki
dewys adventure
bug island (although reviewed horrible but still...)
project hammer (rumored to be cancelled but still...)
disaster day of crisis
dq swords
re: umbrella chronicles

and i'm sure there's a couple i'm missing. but that's a great deal of 3rd party games that are already on deck not to mention the ones that are in development. maybe beyond that list you can say i'm being optimistic. but i think there's a lot more 3rd party REAL games you're going to see being announced or reported on come early next year. and also through the wii's life cycle.

to say that most devs are just going to turn out mainly casual friendly games i think is too much of a general rest on their laurels statement and just too much of a generalization. sure devs want to ride the band wagon but a lot of them are going to do what they do best and build games up from the ground and try to showcase them to the heavy install base. in my opinion anyway

Look at attach rates of consoles ...

Many users owned 100+ games on the PS2 but I doubt the attach rate of the console ever passed 15 or 20 games; tons of consoles were sold with only a couple of games. This is how the industry has always operated and only a fool would produce a console where you needed to recover hundreds of dollars from game sales.

@kmass88

That's hardly a stellar lineup of third party hardcore games. Are you trying to say they'll appeal to the hardcore gamer like:

Resident Evil 5
Grand Theft Auto 4
Call of Duty 4
Mass Effect
Killzone 2
Halo 3
Haze
Bioshock
Unreal Tournament 3
Silent Hill 5
Uncharted
Ace Combat 6
Assassin's Creed
Unreal Tournament 3
Alan Wake
Gears of War
Oblivion
Dead Rising

and the dozens of other games I could list?

I'm not trying to get into a pissing contest with you but lets be honest, the non Nintendo hardcore aren't going to be getting excited about Dewy's Adventure or Jack and Wicki or Bug Island, etc...  Or likely even the majority of the unannounced titles.

I was wondering how many of those are exclusives. Not bashing. But it does defy your point in my opinion. Hell I could play most of them on my PC with better graphics.

I don't think you're bashing, it's just that your comment makes no sense in this conversation.  If you're trying to say that hardcore games available on the PC attracts more non-Nintendo hardcore gamers to the Wii or attracts more third party hardcore game development to the Wii I just don't get your logic.  All I see in your comment is some poor way to try to bring down the 360 / PS3 without it actually having anything to do with the conversation.  Seriously what point are you trying to make and how does it defy anything that I've said?  In fact I didn't even mention what systems those games were available for.
