Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft 9/19 Euro Price Drop: Desperation or Confidence? Also, effects?

DMeister, the effects are very hard to forecast. Is the 360market saturated, by that i mean do those who want a 360 have one. will those in the market for a wii go for a lower priced 360? will the price tempt those in the market for a PS3 to change there mind? I say no to those two and i do think those who want a 360 probably have one. Where numbers will be shifted though is where little Johny has been asking mum and dad for a Wii, PS3 or 360, the 360 is likely to be the machine received in all cases.

Sansui, The reason I'm ignoring it is because it has no real relevance on the question is two price cuts in seven months desperation or confidence. I know you didn't twist the conversation but still..

I think the effects will be felt most by Sony fanboys, because they are the ones creating threads stating that Microsoft is taking desperate action and that the price cut has failed (even before the price cut takes effect). What's really crazy is that DMeister is one of the biggest Sony supporters but owns a 360. I think it would kill him to start a thread saying something positive about Microsoft or the 360.

just one thing the desperation is on sony side they cannot afford price cut this year, where xbox360 still have a room for more price cut this year or 2009
especially when valhalla mainboard finished for slim redesigned xbox

about ps3 vs xbox 360 price cut

Xbox 360 launched 3 years ago at £280. The same model (well, actually it's better as it now has HDMI and 60gb HDD), is now £170 £130. That's £110 £150 price cut in 3 years , the cheapest european console and £30 more than a retail PS2 and the same price as the PSP !

PS3 launched in 18 months ago for £425. It now costs £300. That's £125 in 18 months, ie, half the time.

win.

Surely a confident Microsoft wouldn't put an XBOX 360 within the price range of last gen consoles ? Nintendo is what I would call confident with no price cuts to date.

I think that it would be a valid argument if the consoles started at similar price points and if they were cut in price for similar reasons. The PS3 needed more aggresive price cutting because it was simply too expensive for the consumer to afford (that's 1/2-1/4 of  the average monthly wage here) .

the XBOX 360 price cuts came about to battle stagnant demand effectivley to bring customers who were unwilling or unsure about purchasing 360's.

Sansui is Sony Selective Memory Syndrome. It is pretty prevalent on the VGChartz boards. Sony fans are always deriding MS for doing things that Sony does. I do think MS cutting the price again so soon is a sign of desperation but then again I thought Sony cutting the price on the PS3 so quickly was a sign of desperation as well.

If you're going to edit someone else's post, at least do it right.  You are comparing the 360 Pro launch price to the new 360 arcade price.  The 360 arcade is closer to the 360 core which launched at £199 in the UK, so you could say a £70 price cut.

PS3 was never half the average monthly wage in the UK.  Stop trying to justify Sony making a price cut and damning Microsoft for doing the same thing. It's business. Companies make price cuts when they can afford to do so in an effort to sell more of their product.

Of course it is a desperate move.
but it is working for McCain, so it might work out very well for Xbox360.

Microsoft is serious about coming in 2nd and maybe catch up to Wii just a little.

LOL no, that won't happen, the Wii has not stolen any of the PS2/XBox crowd, what it has done is tapped onto potential customers that only saw games as something kids and immature guys do as well as kids.
Every girl that I've dated over the past year either has a Wii or wants a Wii, my sister and mom (neither has ever owned a videogame before) want a Wii. There's a finally a Home Console (and a handheld) that appeal to women, little girls and the older crowd.

I guess MS sells the 360 at a pricepoint where they just break even. That is something sony can just dream of right now. MS is doing a great job to get more and more customers and establish the Xbox brand. They will make a profit with software anyway.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Definitely desperation. Xbox 360 is mostly targetting the average HD Console user with PC-like games... a terrible combination in Europe.

Microsoft is not only being presurred by the brand-loyalty that Sony has, but also by PC's domination.

I seriously don't understand. All I hear from Europeans is how much their pissed off at the gaming companies for giving them the shaft when it comes to pricing and when one of those companies finally does the fair thing and equalizes the price of its console in all world regions Sony fans start screaming about desperation.
Shouldn't you finally be happy your not being screwed over in the pricing department?!

I know how bad it is over there, I went to Ireland over the summer. The amount you pay for a Wii there is more than I pay for a 360 Elite over here in the States! You should be demanding that Sony and Nintendo adjust their prices to account for different currencies!
