Forums - Nintendo - Washington Post: Nintendo Is Star of E3 Show as Rivals Scramble to Catch Up

Im starting to think all this media love isn't because of the great sales, but in fact the other way around.  The great sales is because of all the media love of the wii.  Why does the media seem to love the wii so much?  Im starting to think it is for the same reason that they are always crying about the violence in video games and movies...  I really think all this love for the wii is part of the jack thompson type media who don't like the type of games that the PS3 and 360 offer.

On another note... who seriously thinks they are going to get fit using the wiifit?  If you do... you are probably going to be a fatty for the rest of your life...  Sorry but its true.

I think the mainstream media is just playing into the new craze of casual gamers, I mean it wasn't Super Mario Galaxy or Super Smash Brothers Brawl or Halo 3 or Killzone 2 that is getting all the attention, it's Wii Fit. A game that makes a person ask (well it makes me ask anyways) what kinds of new gamers it's going to attract and what will keep them "gaming" when the novelty of Wii Fit and the WiiBoard is over and they grow bored of the game. Will those "gamers" (many likely females middle aged and otherwise that go after the latest fitness craze) stick with the system and buy other games that take advantage of the WiiBoard like a skateboarding or surfing title when the novelty of Wii Fit wears off? I really can't see it.

Something about this entire casual gamer crazy has been bothering me and I could never figure out what it was and it's finally come to me, history is actually repeating itself. When I was very young my parents bought an Atari 2600 and my entire family played it because it was a new experience. Eventually though my mother and stepfather grew bored of the system and that was the end of their gaming for awhile, my siblings and I though continued to get new games and use it.

Then years later my mom picked up a NES with the light gun and duck hunt / super mario brothers and my mom and stepfather were fascinated with the light gun and with duck hunt / super mario brothers and we'd all play it and have competitions. They eventually got bored of it, stopped gaming, and it was my siblings and I left yet again with the system and buying games for it.

Now it's the time of the Wii with it's motion sensing Wiimote that is fascinating the non-gaming moms, fathers, grandmothers, grandfathers, etc (and likely mine this Christmas when they get one) and the WiiBoard that is doing the same with a subset of those non-gamers. Now I have to ask, what is going to keep their attention (say my mother and stepfather) for the long haul this time around where the original Atari 2600 and NES light gun /super mario brothers/duckhunt failed?  I can't help but think eventually when the novelty of these things wear off they'll become bored yet again and the videogame system of the day will be abandoned just like the previous two times. Only this time it might be a lot worse because many videogame companies changing over to get in on the attention and noise being generated by the casual gamers will be left holding the bag with casual games and the audience for them gone.

Anyways sorry for the long post but that's just what I think is going to happen. Please understand that I'm not trying to bash the Wii or anything, if I was it would mean I was bashing the NES which was one of my favorite systems ever, I'm just letting out what I think is going to happen. The casual gamers will eventually abandon us yet again.

PS2: 120 Million
XBox: 25 Million
Gamecube: 22 Million
Dreamcast: 10 Million
Total: 177 Million

Playstation: 105 Million
N64: 35 Million
Saturn: 10 Million
Total: 150 Million

SNES: 49 Million
Genesis: 31 Million
Misc Others: 10 Million
Total: 90 Million

The industry always grows in leaps and bounds and a large portion of the 'new gamers' play very few games and then quit to do 'better' things with their time ... Many non-gamers bought Playstation systems to play You Don't Know Jack, many non-gamers bought the PS2 for Guitar Hero; what Nintendo is doing will not destroy the industry.

First of all, we're a sales site. Let's stop talking with made-up demographics like "casual" and "hardcore," and use more specific terms like "young boys," "teenaged girls," or "seniors," for example.

In the past, the industry has focused mostly on males between the ages of 6-30. In the NES era, it was more 6-16, today its more 14-30. Occasionally games have come along to appeal to different demographics, but let me ask you Legend11: where were the follow up titles to Duck Hunt? I don't mean the next light-gun game, I mean the next title providing a totally new experience designed to appeal to your parents. Nintendo followed up Super Mario Bros. with totally different experiences for the same young male audience with Zelda, Metroid and Kid Icarus, while third parties brought Mega Man, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. All these games were for young males, and so were Sonic, Street Fighter and Donkey Kong Country in the next generation. When the industry abandons an audience, of course that audience stops gaming.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

I think its stupid, just dumb that the press would be so negative towards sony and microsoft, the best show was sony's end of the line, just cuz nintendo announced a balance board that can detect your movement doesnt mean OH DEAR GOD NINTENDO KILLED EVERYONE!! I think they are saying that to hype the wii more and just cuz wii has the hihgest sales.

QED

Classic. Post of the month right here. Thanks for the laughs fishyjoe.

The media can influence sales for sure but usually only for the short term. These products become known as fads and go away after awhile. If a product is poor, not even the media can save it.

Wiifit will definately make you more healthy than just sitting on the couch and twiddling your thumbs. Everyone's metabolism is different but the more you move the more calories you burn. A 150 lb person on average burns about 100 calories an hour just from reading compared to about 340 from walking.  Dusting the house burns almost 200 calories an hour for a 150 lb individual. I imagine the Wii falls somewhere between dusting and walking briskly. Of course if you are doing pushups on the Wii Board that will increase calories burned. Unfortunately lack of knowledge when it comes to a persons health is a big contributer to poor health. Wiifit is geared towards people with some knowledge of fitness and who want to get in better shape. You won't build a lot of muscle mass off of the WiiBB but you can live a healthier lifestyle. By the way yoga poses can burn a ton of calories.

I don't imagine people that are into hardcore games care much about Wiifit but it would be fun to mix it up once and awhile. If deveopers buy into the WiiBB there may be more than just fitness games for it.

It's interesting you should have this viewpoint, because Sony and Microsoft are losing tons of money and probably won't make a net profit over the lifespan of the 360 or the PS3 now. It's traditional gaming that's struggling, not mass market gaming. Nintendo makes billions, Sony and Microsoft lose billions, and you apparently believe this adds up to Nintendo losing out? That's not how the market works. This is another variation on the "Wii is a fad" claims that have gone on since the system's rise. First it was going to die in February, then March (The Storm IS coming!) then June, and yet it keeps going, and going, and selling, and selling, with more games announced and more third party games selling. It isn't losing steam at all.

Now, the only way to call the Wii a fad is to claim that somewhere in the distant future -- a time when none of us can accurately predict -- the Wii will die. Clearly, for the forseeable future, the Wii is going to dominate: so I guess the only defense now is that in the unforseeable future, way down the line where none of us can make accurate predictions, it will die.

I predict the Wii fad will die out in 5 or 6 years.

 If a "fad" lasts 5 or 6 years...that's hardly a fad...

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Lol I'm a hardcore gamer and most FPS's I've seen and played are kind of the same.
Agreed, there's very few unique FPS now a day.

I think that's his point, perhaps he should have put quotations around fad
