cause they lost to us in WW2
^ Actually, Japanese tend to like anime-esque games, which is probably why FF did so well post 7 when they became more anime-like AND also why RPG's/Gundam Games (any anime game really)/Cell-shaded tend to do better in Japan.
So technically they prefer graphics over gameplay, because a gameplay can be crap so long as it has a brand name attached to the face (thus being graphics) and it'll do well in Japan.

Although JRPGs have been adopted more readily in NA and EU then FPS have in Japan. Perhaps Japan as a culture is simply more traditional and less willing to try new things. |
The problem is that there is a misconception in the West that JRPGs are a stale genre. I think it's the same problem with FPSs in Japan.
BTW, American gamers do like story-driven games. Ever heard of the Half Life? Ever heard of God of War(not Gears of War)? Ever heard of Final Fantasy? All three of those series are story-driven and have one thing in common. They are all very popular in the West.

This is the problem with American gamers. Many of them only want to play games with realistic art styles. I am not saying I don't mind realistic visual styles, it's just that I don't see why American gamers prefer realistic over anime/cel shaded. People should realize by now that Halo's art style is quite cartoony compared to say, Call of Duty.

He was about game industry generally, not just PS3. About 70% of the PC games also fail to make profit.

You do realise that Chris Deering left Sony nearly 3 years ago? That's before the PS3 even launched. Leaving him (more than likely) without any access to internal sales data. His estimations are as good as the next mans.
“My guess and analysis shows that less than 3 out of 10 games recover their development and marketing costs with boxed goods sales"
The man is basing his estimations off guesswork and his own personal analysis.
Also, he doesnt even specify the PS3. He makes a broad statement about the industry as a whole.
Do you want to read and cry (?),
OT: Sorry for going off topic.

indifference =/= hate.
For me, when the industry pushes out a game better than Perfect Dark I will get back into the genre

I am amazed that someone really did read that article. Youre right, about 70% on any platform fail to make profit.
Yeah, all hc gaming might be threatened right now. Casual games are easy and cheap to make and they don't have to sell as well as hc games. I think japanese will find those casual games good enough as they are not too fond to play hc games(hc games is kind of western term anyway).
I think it have something to do with your character.
Like, you can't see the character you are controling, then again there is Dragon Quest where you can't see your party members because the battle is set to a first person view, thats why i can't get into the series....but that is a RPG so it is pretty different.
Thats my take anyway.

^^^ This is what you get for blowing a rumor out of proportion

yeah same here i think of myself as a "japanese" gamer ,, never liked the FPS for many reasons and not being able to see my charecter is the main one.I used to play CS with my friends and i was the first to die every time lol so i was frustrated recently i've seen KZ2 videos and it is very tempting, who knows it might be the one that can interduce me to FPS genere the right way
