I think that the Sony quote is taken out of context, I read the article and they just said that it was the last physical format, but that it still had alot more potential that is untapped.

What is troubling for Blu-Ray is one of the biggest manufactures, Samsung, is convinced that it wont last.

Edit: The only way for Blu-Ray to get mass adoption is to lower price and stop making dvd.  If they only stop producing thier movies in dvd format people will not buy Blu-ray at the price it is at.

Sounds more like they are saying it's not getting any bigger and better... didn't say they were killing it or it was dying... like what your title made me think....

EDIT: I also doubt it's at it's max... tech advances.... it could be at it's possible limit now with the tech available....

Batman in Blu-Ray will kick off some sales I think.

As for what can disrupt the "plateauing" Blu-Ray........

Blu-ray is the first video format that has me 100% satisfied in terms of PQ and AQ. I hope what ever comes out is at least as good. With DD, there is so much macroblocking in the video because of high compression. At least that's the way it is now.

Who cares about the cell in this thread? This is about future of Blu-Ray. No one has yet said why consumers are going to upgrade when they have large dvd collection that is good enough, especially with upconverting players a dime a dozen. THIS is what will keep Blu-Ray from taking off. If it is going to take off, the price has to come WAY down. The jump in quality and ease of use (not having to rewind, etc in dvd vs vhs) is not as large in blu ray vs upconverted dvd as it was in vhs vs dvd.

Still, this is not the majority. Most people are fine with the way dvd works now. Blu-Ray overshot the market. Do we know another product that did this? We see the result from it too. Blu-Ray will be defeated by something, be it DD or something else if the price and ease of use is right.

All he's saying is that the spec are done and you will no longer need to upgrade your firmware every 6 months....

Price has already come down.
You can get new released for 22$ or so at Best Buy and there has been a lot of good movies available at that price recently..

Sony is just doing what they should do right now. They know they messed up big time with digital music, and Stringer is making sure that does not happen again. Right now they are in the perfect spot. They are one of the major supporters of Blu-ray and they have a video service that can be accessed by 15+ million users. In the next 2 years Sony plans to continue to expand their digital distrabution to inclued every electronic they sell, while also gaing a massive libarary.

This is the reason Sony is going to do everything they can to continue to improve the Playstation 3, and make sure the general public understands the capability of the system. This is a major point in the history of the CE industry. Companies that fail to pull in a good peace of maket share for their DD services will find it extreamly difficult to survive. Right now Sony, apple, amazon, and Microsoft are doing the best they can to get a jump on everyone else.

The next few years are going to become some of the toughest times companies have ever faced. Sony knows they have got to make the right moves from here on out. Haveing support for the last of the disk based formats, and support for the future of DD, they are off to a great start, but they must keep moving the ball forward, and not allow other to gain massive mindshare.
