Forums - Sony - ps3 red light flashing?

My ps3 keeps turning itself off after about 2 minutes and after that the red light flashes. I have a 60 gb.

Has anyone else gotten this problem? if so how did you fix it?

I'm hesitant to send it back to sony because I don't wan't a new model and I'm not even sure I'm still in warranty.

I hope this isn't the ps3 version of RROD lol.

Yeah your f'ed.

Sounds like it might be overheating. It is possible that your fan isn't working, which would cause it to shut down pretty quickly to prevent heat damage. Although if it shuts off after only two minutes on a cold start up, it could be something else.

Before turning it in, try this:

Hard Reset procedure for the PS3 (as instructed by Sony CS).

Be sure to backup your settings/games saves by doing a System > Backup on your PS3 or you may lose your game saves! Also, this is a last resort procedure prior to exchanging/returning to sony.

1. Power Off the PS3 via the power switch in back and power back on w/switch.

2. Hold Power Button on the Front until you hear 3 beeps.

3. Then go through the initial setup and then run a full Format via System > Format. (will take approx 3 1/1 hours). You may need to have our AV cables ready if your using HDMI (in case HDMI isn't detected after initial reset).

4. Restore your backup you made prior to doing factory/hard reset (optional, if you created a backup).

Hopefully this will solve your freezing problems.

Problems/symptons that this appears to have resolved:
-freezing when doing anything
-no harddrive activity
-freezing when trying to use onboard keyboard or bringing up keyboard
-game/movie disc freezes system

Also try swapping in your original 60GB drive, assuming you left the original drive imprint intact as a back up.

overheating

are you sure nothing is covering the vents?

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Definitely overheating. When I was talking to a Sony guy about it on the phone after my PS3 broke, as soon as I said that, he immediately knew it was over....

I assume the screen goes weird coloured when it stops working. I would advise doing what you can to copy off your data. If you send it to Sony, it is likely they will have some refurbished older consoles for you, assuming it is in guarantee

It doesn't even come on anymore. The red light just keeps blinking. I called sony and it looks like it's a power problem that just has to be sent in and guess what? My warranty expired on July 17 and it had to crap up now!

I really hope I can get a 60gb back. I'll just reinstall my 320 gb harddrive in the new system but it looks like my saves would be gone. It looks like I'll be losing my third place rank in the soul calibur special vs mode as well thanks to having to wait for 2 weeks. My disc is also stuck in the system. I hope sony sends it back.

Does anyone know if the friend's list is attached to the account or stored in the system flash drive?
