Very true in ATL. Best Buy had 1 in stock the other night and had gotten a shipment that morning. Case in point is that you can find PS3's and X360s in stock at most stores and easily online, but Wii's are near impossible to find ANYWHERE. This level of ongoing demand for a console is completely unprecedented in video game history. I can't fault Nintendo's production when they're out-producing the volume any other console has produced in the year after launch.
I'm no expert on supply and demand. Maybe Nintendo is stockpiling or maybe this is all they can manufacture currently. But take into consideration if this we're on the other foot. What if the PS3 had a spike and was selling 200,000 a week instead of 53,000. Do you think Sony would be able to create enough PS3s to sustain that kind of demand? Could Microsoft? Do remember that Sony came out of the gate with less units on hand than the Wii during launch, holding back many regions from even having console launches. So maybe we should be applauding Nintendo for bringing out enough consoles to gain a deciding advantage over the market leader XBox360. Something is telling me that if the PS3 we're to become popular, it wouldn't be able to even supply 200,000 a week.
Also as a side note, do remember that Nintendo at this point is realizing that their real money to be earned is in Japan. America is second banana. If production is going to be ramped up, it'll be for Japan first most likely. If you think Wii Sports is big over there, just you wait until Wii Fit comes through. It will completely break the bank over there.
Just a note, I would actually be more disappointed in Sony if they were the ones not producing enough units as opposed to Nintendo. It may sound like bias, but it is actually for two reasons, first of all Sony has far greater manufacturing power, and second they were expecting the level of demand the Wii is getting. And they got it for a while.
Note that I said "more" disappointed not "completely", they do have some interesting issues with producing the 405nm blue-violet diodes still, so complications would be understandable if they were selling out.
Actually, Sony contracts out to the same people that Nintendo and MS do. All this stuff is made by companies like Foxxcon and Asus.
The Wii has the fastest launch this industry has yet seen. To say "they should know better" and "they should have produced more" is fucking ignorant.
