Forums - Microsoft - Even if (or when) the 360 ends up in 3rd, would you consider MS successful?

if they have made more money from this gen then they did last then yes

"you can look at it both ways.

xbox 360> xbox; yes

xbox brand going from second (last gen) to third; no"

to flip this i cant think of a single way to spin sony as being successful with the ps3

i dont know what this thread has to do with sony but they have been very successfull. for one, blu ray would of finished without the ps3.

i assume you'r talking about the ps brand, once again, what has my post or this thread got to do with sony?

I think most of us thought the 360 would land in third place anyway, it just that the 360 has surpassed everyone's expectations so now where expecting/hoping that the 360 stays in second place.

With the current games available and the ones coming out (such as L4D, Fable 2, and Gears of War 2), development for the 360 could drop dead and it would still be a great console.

Well, I think 360 is about twice as popular and known as Xbox, and it certainly manage to expand the library and remove the stigma of a "shooter only" console, while at the same time cementing its brand name and viability.

Yes, I think the 360 was a resounding success despite the huge hardware problems that gimped the consoles popularity.

Nintendo, on the other hand, dwarfs any success the other brands have managed, and has become one of the largest companies and brands in the world.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I'll consider the 360 successful if it was profitable at the end of its lifetime, still a long way to go. Sales numbers and marketshare don't matter much if money was being lost.

That's a different kind of success. I was thinking more along the lines of the 360 being a relative marketing success rather than a full on viable source of income for Microsoft.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Look at it this way, Halo 3 still was the biggest media launch in history which showed that video games is the bigger future entertainment market not movies. How many companies say they did that?

They are making money on xbox 360, while it doesn't counter the deficit of the first xbox, it's still doing better than PS3. At the end of the generation even if PS3 outsells 360 1.5:1 Microsoft could still come out ahead in profits.

All we ever do is compare consoles so sometimes we do it out of reflex, but I must agree its very hard to spin this generation as a loss for MS, even if they end up third they beat the old Xbox, started making some money (even if they lose some it won´t be as much as last gen) and whats most important is they managed to get a foot into the market and have had some of the biggest hits thig gen so far and managed to steal some exclusives from Sony, they may have sacrificed some quality in order to get the 360 out early but all in all they managed to take the Xbox from and outsider and newcomer to a equal competitor who is taken seriously by the industry and most importantly developers...

I'd call it a success if they'll make a strong software ground for the next-gen
