Even if (or when) the 360 ends up in 3rd, would you consider MS successful?

They are making money on xbox 360, while it doesn't counter the deficit of the first xbox, it's still doing better than PS3. At the end of the generation even if PS3 outsells 360 1.5:1 Microsoft could still come out ahead in profits.
