It's 3.09M behind.

Over the last 12 months, it has sold 4M.

I cannot see how it wouldn't pass it.

Personally, I see MKDS being within 1.5M by the end of the year.

I think you cannot compare the two, since one is a hardcore racer and the other is a softcore racer.

I am not sure about that. Contact with the rails slows you down much more in MK than GT.

Talk about damage modelling. I mean a racer doesnt need that, right?

well probably, but you can't compare a PS2 game that costed $70 with a much smaller userbase to a DS game that costs $35 on amazon with a much larger handheld userbase.
