It depends, if books are getting checked out as often or less than before then yes, if there are more books checked out then their tactic seems to be working. So which is it?

More fiction DVDs are being rented out at this library than all other media (books, CDs, non-fiction DVDs, ect)

I agree that it is a bit much to rent out equipment.  Maybe if the equipment is relatively inexpensive or that it can't be taken out of the library (i.e. you have to give them a driver's license or a deposit before you can check it out), then I don't mind, but consoles are too much.

It just all comes down to cost.  They can probably get a lot of those DVD's for $10-$20 (or less if they go to Wal-Mart!), and pretty much any book is going to cost that much.  The downside is the DVD's can get scratched, but I guess people can fuck up books about as badly.

No deposit on anything.

No credit card on file, or any form of ID to sign up for DVDs. If you cannot read/write, a librarian can fill the form(s) out for you. No proof is needed to verify if you are indeed Homer Simpson that lives on Evergreen Terrace, or not.

Woops, should of said: More fiction DVD's are being rented out than any other medium combined.

One of the libraries in our town gets crazy traffic for its comic book collection, which is supposed to be one of the best in the COUNTRY.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Ehm.. is this new in the US?? in the Netherlands we have been able to lend "other media" then books from the library since... VHS.. You could lend VHS, CD, Snes games, pc games, DVD's etc.. ... of course some will copy it, but if you steal it you would lose your library card.. and would never be ble to go to it anymore.. But think about the poor people who can't afford to buy a DVD they would like to see... or a CD.. or a Game..? Now they can enjoy these "other Media" too.. Why is that different from enoying a book?

Most libraries (where I live) have always had VHS and CDs. However, there has been a huge change from focusing on life-enriching media (such as monumental, and educational media), to focusing entirely on entertainment, fictional movies and the like.

As far back as I can remember, some did rent out PC games. However, they were strictly focused on learning games, and the most "edgy" were games like Sim City, Oregon Trail, and Civilization -=- Games that taught you something while you played.

Now I'm wondering if in a few weeks, I can rent a copy of Fallout 3 and Fable 2.

FYI: The library is in my hometown....In Ohio. Yes Zucas, they have whored themselves out. It's just insane. When they got this cash they didn't increase staff, give them better pay (my GF makes $8/hr), increase hours (most staff are PT), or expand ANY other sections...Other than video games and Blu Ray.

Buying blockbusters for a library seems a bit silly when they are available to buy or rent from every high street, if they had bought more cult and hidden gem type films which might not have had a big budget but explored more unusual or touchy issues then it would be great.
