Forums - Microsoft - My local Toys r Us has a couple of HD-DVD players in stock...

It's the Xbox Media Center remote so can be used for the drive and media center extender.

You can also use it as an external PC DVD-ROM. With Vista just plug it in and it works. XP you'll need drivers but are easy to find. If you ever decide to buy some some HD DVD's you can back them up on your PC in case the drive ever fails.

If you already use your Xbox as a DVD player, then $30 is negligible if you're interested in picking up some HD-DVDs before they disappear. Particularly if you want the remote (which presumably means you do use your Xbox to watch DVDs).

I have one, but I only use it to watch HD-DVDs (out of necessity since it's my only HD-DVD player) since the 360 really is too noisy for movie watching at normal volume levels.

Also, you'll need to use an HDMI cable if you want a 1080p signal, assuming you're using a 1080p display. Otherwise the signal (for HD-DVDs) is reverted to a 1080i signal (yes, some people can tell the difference).

Without the HDMI connection, standard DVDs will only output at 480p.

So get a HDMI cable if aren't already using one.

It would be a neat hack to be able to shoehorn a 360 HD-DVD drive into a PC casing optical drive slot, although the button/tray layout may be too wide.

An even better hack would be to replace the 360 optical drive with an HD-DVD drive, eliminating the need for an external box and AC adapter.

The main problem with the HD-DVD drive is that it IS an external drive, which requires its own AC adapter and just isn't an elegant solution for adding HD-DVD playback.

But for $30, who cares if you just want to watch HD-DVDs?

Oh thanks everyone... I will pick one =p

Yeah, the upscaling capabilities of the Toshiba HD DVD players are worth way more than 29.99.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

They can be used as external DVD-ROM drives for your PC...

So for $29.99 thats not a bad thing to have ;)

Oh, you didn't mean the 360 addon then....oops

For $10 I would say yes because you can get a lot of second hand HD DVDS pretty cheap. But if your gonna pay $30 make sure you use it a bit.

It's just that simple.

For an upscaling DVD player? Yeah i'd do that. Don't want to wear out your 360s DVD drive.

I still use my hddvd add-on for xbox all the time.
for that price, get it and get it now!
