Forums - Sales Discussion - The Inquirer says Wii sales slow in Japan...

Well, the sales trend certainly suggests supply constraints. Two weeks ago, sales sharply dipped to 65k units. Then, numbers from last week came out and sales went back up to 78K units without any apparent reason, especially since no game was released for the Wii that week.

Except 65-78k is no big deal, with DS it goes from like 120 to 200k every other week. But my point is, could Wii sell 200k a week with unlimited supply? That I doubt.. Oh well, cant do much but watch and wait..

People see the sales of the Nintendo DS since the launch of the DS Lite and think that it is normal for a system to sell 150,000 units per week in Japan; it's not! Look at the PS2 ... it sold 22,009,750 over 363 weeks for an average of 60,632 systems per week The Wii has been hitting 60,000-80,000 units sold per week in Japan at the slow time of year (Q1) with no game releases ... These are not slow sales, the Inquirer is just full of idiots ...

Yeah but an average of 60k for PS2..it has been selling like 20-30k for like the past two years that I have been watching. That means it had to be averaging 100k+ a week in it's heyday. You cant fool me :)

Yeah, but the DS numbers also went down quite sharply the same time as the Wii's, and went back up at the same time. That suggests something about Nintendo's shipping capacity. Comparing the DS' weekly 200k to the Wii's 80k is not really fair. Not yet anyway. The DS is PHENOMENAL with great software, while the Wii is only selling on the back of Wii Sports. Don't forget, the Wii is still selling more than all the other consoles combined(including the PS2, PS3 and PSP), except of course, for the DS, and has been quite consistent at 80k units since year end.

I think no. Probably the sales is 100~150k. But I don't agree to compare the sales of Wii and DS directly because DS is portable console. In Japan, it is common Wii is the console as "one per a house." On the other hand, portable consoles like DS are considered as "one per man."

They call this journalism?

If these do not pick the Wii from out of the slump then the field will be left to the Xbox360 and the PS3.
So if Wii is in the slump while selling 70k a week, where does The Inquirer think the 360 and PS3 are now?

That article doesn't even make sense. First off they say that Wii sales are slumping in Japan, which they aren't. They'd have known this if they actually tried to get some numbers Secondly, they say it's doing this because of bad games like Need for Speed Carbon, Red Steel and Farcry. These games are aimed at the NA and European markets and one of them;Red Steel, is doing very well in NA. ARgh, there's a lot more wrong with it. But basically the article reads like this. "We think that the Wii is a gimmick based on some of the last minute rushed ports, so it's probably not doing well in Japan". As for the DS/Wii comparison: 11 weeks in, the Wii is only 140,000 units behind the DS. We're probably looking at what will become one of Japan's most successfull consoles.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Most people take shots at Fox because they dont agree with it's politics. It's no less reliable than any other mainstream news network, more reliable than Clinton News Network aka CNN. Most of the media is extremely leftist, Fox News is moderate, so they get a lot of hate.
Silly right wing nutball. Anyone with a brain knows Faux news is a right wing propoganda network and nothing more. The arguement of a left wing media somewhere has never resonated with anyone other than people warped enough to still think Bush is a good president.

That's a good question. The Wii is selling about tripple weekly right now what the PS3 is. Over 400k units were sold in January alone. All indictations are whatever is stocked is sold, same pretty much as what's been happening to the DS in the last year.
