Forums - Microsoft - Analysts endorse 360 price drops

If cheap sells best why is the 360, post price cut, still not in the top 10 OR the top 20 on Amazon? The PS3 and Wii are always up there, but no 360 at all (in fact the highest 360, the arcade, is even behind the 150 dollar Gears of War 2 lancer).

Some people are stupid or bad at math, for those people "Wow 200 dollars for a 360" will work. Those who can do math will look at a 200 dollar 360 and think "well I'd have to pay 50 dollars per year to go online, 100 for wifi (if I don't want to run ethernet all over the house), 100+ dollars for a tiny 20GB hard drive add on (maybe 100 dollars or a 60GB now, yay) and it still won't play blu ray or do anything else the PS3 can do". arcade+HD+Online+wifi=450 dollars, and thats with a smaller HD then the PS3 comes with standard. It's a worse deal and I think most consumers know that (especially in Europe)

In other news the Kia Rio is the cheapest car on the market at 10,000 dollars but is also one of the worst selling because it sucks. The camary is a very good seller, far better then the kia, but also is twice as much with a lot more features then the Rio. Cheap isn't always the winner. Plus if people REALLY want cheap, there's the PS2 which I bet will be 99 dollars for the holidays or the current price with more bundled games.

also the PS2 didn't get under 199 by neutering features and releasing a PS2 lite which had only half the functionality of the normal PS2.  199 for a full featured console is different then 199 for the version that is missing key components.

Nah people like to buy in installments $200.00 get you playing games, you can add wi fi later and then add the HD a few months later. But for $200.00 you can play right away were $400.00 to play with PS3

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

people are willing to pay more to get more

it's not like u r buying something for 200000 when there's something for 100000

it's only 200

and the arcade can't play online right?

Nope. it can play online.

And I'd disagree with you about willing to pay more to get more: Fast food places are far more popular than fancy restaurants. Even then, dollar menus are more popular than standard fare at fast food places.

WalMarts and Dollar Stores are vastly larger than traditional places that don't focus on the "cheap" and "discount" structure of the price-concious retail store(s). If you believe consumers are willing to pay more to get more, then I don't think you have a grasp on the modern American life.

JGarret - I don't know. We'll find out this Christmas. Microsoft HAS to deal Sony a decicive blow in the US this holiday season to ensure they are 2nd place for quite some time in the future.

If Microsoft can win Holiday 2008 in the US by a large enough margin to keep it competitive with the Playstation 3 worldwide this holiday (ie, 1:1 sales WW), then I think Microsoft can stick it out long enough to stay in the 2nd spot until 2010 or 2011, and have a sucessor launched before the PS3 overtakes the X360.

people eat everyday , food =/= consoles

we don't buy consoles everyday,

for the people who have money issues i think 50% are willing to pay more

 and yes i don't know i'm just guessing :)

it's not going to be the wifi adapter or HDD or even the online fees,it's going to be bluray that puts ps3 ahead of xbox360 in people's eyes this holiday season.

If it wins this holiday season I agree it will because of the blu ray player

We'll see how well the 200 dollar arcade goes over... If it doesn't go over well...

Gears and Fable being better than LBP and R2 is very subjective in nature. WKC might be in there for Japan as well.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Conservatives:  Pushing for a small enough government to be a guest in your living room, or even better - your uterus.

1. Amazon isn't reliable - If the PS3 can lead over the Wii on amazon why is it still being pwned overall?

2. Systems without a fleshed out online (Wii/Xbox 360 arcade) are >50% of the market.

3. The attach rate for internet is <50% for the PS3 and it is free and the PS3 has Wifi.

4. Not everyone who buys PS3s uses it to play Blu Ray.

So if 50% of the market doesn't use all the online functionality, explain why they would want to pay an extra $100 for a 60gb HDD?

So if a large proportion of the userbase with PS3s doesn't even use Blu Ray, why would Xbox 360 owners as a whole care at this time?

5. The PS2 is actually $130 and it needs a $25 memory card - That makes it pretty darn close to the price of the Arcade which does have online functionality and anyone who buys a PS2 over an Arcade at this point really needs their head examined. Since this is controversial I'll explain.

  • Awesome library? (Much of it is out of print/hard to find)
  • Awesome upcoming titles? (Like?)
  • Awesome visuals? (The Xbox 360 shows a clear difference even lay people can appreciate)
  • Great word of mouth? (Gamestop employees will likely suggest an Xbox 360 Arcade if you're holding a PS2 box. - I would) Also if you're buying it for the kids do they want a PS2? *All my friends have Xbox 360s and Wiis! and PS3s! <Insert correct one here>*
