Definately earlier than that. I remember well the second gen fanboys; heck I was one.
But, of course, fanboys existed long before consoles too. Let's face it, all being a fanboy means is being so crazy in love with something that you are blind to its faults. There have probably been fanboys for as long as things have been mass produced. And with very little modification of the definition, you could envelope concepts like over the top patriotism, which has certainly existed for most of human history.

I was a Nintendo fan and was depressed, didn't do any fighting, and admitted that they were not doing well. I could see that there hide was getting tanned. I didn't feel the need to say that they were going to win over and over when it was obvious that they weren't. That would be childish.

In the last gen, I got the feeling that there was a "grand coalition" against Nintendo, where fans of both the PS2 and Xbox would get together to trash Nintendo.
I don't know why those groups will link up, since Xbox was being outsold by a large margin by PS2 as well, and yet they treat the Xbox as "equal in class" to the PS2.

From what I remember last generation, it was all about how Nintendo was "kiddy." This generation, alot more fanboys of 360 and Wii ("Wii60") collaborate to trash the PS3.
I'd say it's all about getting the system that has the games you want. Last generation, it was GC + PS2 for me. This generation, it is 360 + PS3 for me.

Fanboys of competing products are always willing to share talking points about a third product. Its not a conspiracy, its just that both are always looking for ways to trash things they don't like.
Just look at these boards this gen and you'll see what I mean. Xbox and Wii fans have pretty similar things to say when trashing the PS3; Wii and PS3 fans have plenty in common when putting down the 360; and, of course, 360 and PS3 fans use the same insults against the Wii.
Sure, as a fan of a something it can feel like the world's against you a lot of time, but really its just that every fan group is out to trash every other one.
IDK i wasnt into this whole next gen wars thing back then until i joined a gaming forum!!
