Definately earlier than that. I remember well the second gen fanboys; heck I was one.
But, of course, fanboys existed long before consoles too. Let's face it, all being a fanboy means is being so crazy in love with something that you are blind to its faults. There have probably been fanboys for as long as things have been mass produced. And with very little modification of the definition, you could envelope concepts like over the top patriotism, which has certainly existed for most of human history.
