Forums - Gaming - Intel courting Microsoft/Sony for Larrabe (GPU) deal.

What matters more then any of this is dropping the direct X architecture from games. If Open GL can make a comeback with 3.0 we'll all see a HUGE improvement in what PC games can do (as a bonus EVERY OS, console and handheld not made by microsoft uses a form of Open GL so if Direct X was dropped it would make things far easier for all developers).

I don't see Sony taking this deal since a future version of the cell should work well GPU free given the very high potential for its architecture. MS might, but that would probably make them as hard or harder to design for then the PS3 removing one of its only advantages.

Down with Direct X though, its the scourge of PC gaming.

The power is likely going to be there Larrabee is specced to have 1 Tflop of double precision power compared to 120 Gflops from the R700 and 20 from the Cell 1.

That line is so intellectually dishonest it hurts. I assume by "Cell 1" you are referring to the version in the PS3s (not the same version in those expensive blades from IBM) which specifically neglects double precision performance as you don't need that kind of accuracy in games. You are either a terrible person or a useful idiot.

a cpu gpu combo would do wonders to reduce the price of a console

the cell is a cpu/gpu.  it just tilts a lot more toward cpu.  if they wanted to (and i would bet on it) sony could make the ps4 cell very strong and make devs use it for graphics.   its the best architecture for what ever the new kind of pixelating the screen (ray something or other) so if people moved to that, then a gpu would be wasteful.

i officially boycott boycotts.  crap.

Hopefully nobody bites since we already have one console manufacturer cutting into publishers' profits with an architecture that makes cross-platform development harder than it should be.

Well, multi-cores are the future, so I imagine both MS and Sony will have a pretty hefty multi-core processor next gen.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Wintel console is right around the corner!

cell + larrabee = pwn?

(if of course larrabee is more of a gpu than cpu, but then again im not a computer wiz....nor do i pretend to be one -_-)

edit: nvm cell 2 >>>>>>>> larrabee :]

wait....what about nintendo???? they can be sneaking and snag this larrabee, signing exclusive rights with intel!!! lol that would be funny

Sorry, I was led astray then. I was misinformed if thats the case. I was told by someone whom I thought knew what they were talking about that double precision was actually more useful with certain types of game code.

Tease.

I'm confused, which one is better Cell 2 or Larabee?

Would Sony be able to use both Cell and Larabee plus a GPU in their console?
