Forums - PC - Computer help: PC resets state/settings when I turn it off

This is via SaviorX (he's on his Wii and can't make a thread through it):

My PC resets everytime I turn it off. I could save a file on the desktop, and then turn the comp. off. When I turn it back on its gone. I'm guessing its an old school computer, hence why nothing can be changed and the desktop background stays the same. Its an IBM ThinkCentre.

I want to install a Wireless Internet piece, but it requires turning off the comp., resetting the instillation's progress in the process.

Is there ANY way that I can stop this computer from refusing to save things? Either that, or someone mails me a Windows XP CD.

It is an Windows XP computer by the way.

Most the time when something like this happens, it is because there is a program installed on the PC that essentially re-writes a section of the hard drive with the "default" settings. This prevents students from changing the backdrop or how Windows works. Also, if they install a virus, it would get written over by the new copy of windows.

If you can log in as an administrator, I would check to see if a 3rd party program is installed that would do this.

Ah, memories of high school and college classes are coming back. You either had to keep saving files on your flash drive, or put them in the trash to avoid them being erased upon restart.

I lucked out one time because we were working on Macs that didn't have that software and mine froze on me.

Did you try saving this in a hard drive directory itself and not on the desktop?

Also How much free space do you have left on the hard drive?

@obieslut

stop being an idiot and actually read the first post, or even the first line of the first post.
