I really believe the war would be about even between Nintendo and Sony if it was Nintendo and Sony like it was Nintendo and Genesis. The big problem is that Nintendo still has its demographic solidly (because there is no low priced kid friendly console besides the Wii) yet Microsoft is trying to eat away at the Sega demographic (the teen and up gamer market). People say things like Nintendo is owning, but that's only half true since one side has competition and the other doesn't. If you want to play GTA4 or games like that there are two choices, if you want to play a Mario game or even games like Mario on a closed kid friendly console with things like friend codes what else are you going to buy if not a Wii? When MS finally drops out it will be interesting to see how the sega/Nintendo war of the 21st century plays out. |
Interesting argument and probably a correct one. Microsoft has taken away much of what would have been Sony's sales. I do think that Nintendo is doing all they can to try to wrestle away some of the "cool" market with games like Disaster: Day of Crisis and some 3rd party efforts (House of the Dead: Overkill, Madworld, etc.) but honestly this market is pretty much owned by Sony and Microsoft.
One thing though. I don't see Microsoft getting out of the business any time soon. The 360 is doing much better than the original XBox and has to be looked at as a success to Microsoft. Sony and Microsoft will be at each other for a long time I believe.
If there was Nintendo and just Sony it would be pretty even though. I do agree with that.

WHEW! The PS1 didn't beat the N64 then, and Gamecube and Xbox both raped the PS2. Thanks for the tip!
I remember it that way. Personally, it was the only console generation in which I loved owning more than one console.
Both were cool, but donkey kong country was the best game of the snes, if realeased earlier would have settled matters. I´ve owned a MS at the time of Ninty vs. SEGA, and both looked cool, but too expensive... only got my SNES at 96.

That was the only gen there was a war... now the only reason there is a war is because sony is angry of being last. I don't see MS bashing nintendo as often as sony, they even copied the Miis....
There will be an other war though.... next gen when everybody starts with cheap powerfull HD systems and all have motion capabilities...

I STILL have flashbacks of that war. Sometimes I wake up sweating, and I scream "THERE WAS NO BLAST PROCESSOR!!"
There should be some sort of parade or something for those of us who did battle in the 16-bit wars. It was without a doubt, the most blood thirsty, name calling, backstabbing console war of all time. Bubsy the Bobcat went crazy, Aero the Acrobat choked to death by a gold ring, and the cast of Street Fighter II turned out to be double agents. Never forget those that fought and died in the SNES/Genesis war of 1991.
Never forget.
The SNES/Genesis console war is the only true one that ever took place, and even then only in America. (SNES crushed the Megadrive in Japan, and it in turn did much better than SNES in Europe.) Furthermore, it only happened at all due to very odd circumstances, mostly notably the SNES coming out a full two years after the Genesis(!) I don't think you'd ever see something like that happen nowadays.
There definitely were a lot of awesome games produced by both sides, and it was a good time to be a gamer. And the 16-bit console war was a LOT more intense than the current one, with aggressive advertising and censorship issues going all the way to the US Congress. (The current "war" is a total farce, as the Wii is a runaway success while PS360 share 90% of the same library. What's at stake there?) But it was definitely a pyrric generation for Nintendo and Sega, as both damaged themselves very badly and cleared the way for Sony to enter the market.
I don't agree that the fans were less intense back then. What takes more courage: screaming profanities anonymously on the Internet, or telling people off in real life? I can't even tell you how many SNES vs. Genesis shouting matches there were in my school 15 years ago... Not to mention, there was no Internet, so you had to get your info from print magazines back then. You should have seen the arguments that a new Gamepro preview would produce!
End of 2008 totals: Wii 42m, 360 24m, PS3 18.5m (made Jan. 4, 2008)
This was the only console war that ever actually existed.
Nowdays it's just a bunch of idiots on forums talking about their make believe system sellers.

was interesting and unique. The best? I dunno. I actually enjoy this one.
