I really believe the war would be about even between Nintendo and Sony if it was Nintendo and Sony like it was Nintendo and Genesis. The big problem is that Nintendo still has its demographic solidly (because there is no low priced kid friendly console besides the Wii) yet Microsoft is trying to eat away at the Sega demographic (the teen and up gamer market). People say things like Nintendo is owning, but that's only half true since one side has competition and the other doesn't. If you want to play GTA4 or games like that there are two choices, if you want to play a Mario game or even games like Mario on a closed kid friendly console with things like friend codes what else are you going to buy if not a Wii? When MS finally drops out it will be interesting to see how the sega/Nintendo war of the 21st century plays out. |
Interesting argument and probably a correct one. Microsoft has taken away much of what would have been Sony's sales. I do think that Nintendo is doing all they can to try to wrestle away some of the "cool" market with games like Disaster: Day of Crisis and some 3rd party efforts (House of the Dead: Overkill, Madworld, etc.) but honestly this market is pretty much owned by Sony and Microsoft.
One thing though. I don't see Microsoft getting out of the business any time soon. The 360 is doing much better than the original XBox and has to be looked at as a success to Microsoft. Sony and Microsoft will be at each other for a long time I believe.
If there was Nintendo and just Sony it would be pretty even though. I do agree with that.
