Weekly PC Sales: The Orange Box Reappears

Continuing its weekly tradition, sales-tracking marketing research firm NPD has released its regular list of the best-selling PC games at US retailers.

Covering the week of August 17 to 23, the list is mostly unchanged from that of last week. That may soon with next week's list, as that data will include sales of the latest Sims 2 expansion, Apartment Pets.

This week though, the only major difference from week's past is the surprise resurgence of Valve's mega-compilation The Orange Box, which contains Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal and Team Fortress 2.

  1. World Of Warcraft: Battle Chest / Blizzard
  2. The Sims 2 Double Deluxe / EA Maxis
  3. World Of Warcraft / Blizzard
  4. Spore Creature Creator / EA Maxis
  5. World Of Warcraft: Burning Crusade Expansion Pack / Blizzard
  6. Diablo Battle Chest / Blizzard
  7. Nancy Drew: The Phantom Of Venice / Her Interactive
  8. Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare / Infinity Ward
  9. The Orange Box / Valve
  10. Warcraft III Battle Chest / Blizzard

Powerful Blizzard occupies half of the top10 spots, while Maxis holds 2. Call of Duty 4 still selling like crack, and Orange Box showing up almost 1 year after it's release.

Any idea how many units they sell? I would like to see how the PC market compares to the console maerket, in the US.

Blizzard own the PC market.

WoW. yawn at all of the World of Warcraft. There really is no competition in the land of PC gaming these days. The sales used to be so varied before WoW came out.

Just kiss the tip.

I'm surprised to see Orange Box. I figured people would of started buying it digitally over steam.

They have.

These NPD PC lists are stupid...they don't include digital distribution sales.

Orange Box retail sales have picked up because of the TF2 character updates I'm sure.

But I'm sure that it sells more consistently over Steam, as well as COD4 and other popular games.  They'd be up to number 4 or so if we included digital sales.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

WoW has excellent legs.

Those sales exclude digital distribution still so I really don't think anyone should pay much attention to NPD when it comes to PC, unless for some reason your doing a study on which PC games sell retail?
