There wont be a PS4 since the PS3 is future proof.

Definitely not future-proof. You can build a more powerful computer cheaper now, and the visual difference is very, very noticeable. Actually by PC standards it was obsolete out before it even launched.
The next generation of consoles will not only look better but will have a whole different interface.
"Future-proof" is a myth. They said the same thing about Star Wars Galaxies since you could scale the graphics to the point where it made any computer ever made chug slowly.
Nothing in the hi tech world is built for a 10 year life span. Unless you're still rockin your future proof 500 MGhz 256 RAM PC also.

Assumptions required to maintain the ideology of the PS3 being "Future Proof".
1. The PS3 will have a ten year lifespan.
2. There will never be a PS4, only the PS3...
3. The PS3's increasingly dated Blu-Ray player will never become a handicap for it.
4. The Rest of the industry won't move on to better graphics.
5. Sony won't lose anymore exclusives.
6. That being able to say your console sold more just because it was on the market longer actually means anything of significance.
7. That "Future Proof" Isn't just a silly P.R. gimmick and can be used dead seriously in legitimate market and video game discussion.
Haha I love Sony fan boys, how they spin things around just so the PS3 will look like the winner.

People start buing PS3 for 100 as opposed to 90 Wii, just like they started to buy GC:s and Xbox:s the moment they reached price, that was less than 10 above PS2. Could you explain me, why would people pick PS3 for 100, when you can have standalone BD players for 50? |
Because it is a stand alone. If I wanna get your kid a videogame and got to the shelves finding a wii and a ps3 at the same price, or close, the things that the ps3 have as a plus will close the deal. Of course, that´s not absolute and given today library, the wii would have the edge, but in a 4 year span, who knows? The causal market made it´s stand : we exist and like games. So I think is viable that casual and kid games came to ps3, making it more popular, and taking the edge that wii have today, but not all of it. Next gen will have to pull another trick from the hat, cause that one will be copied.
And the ps3 will only be discontinued if it sales goes bottom down after the ps4 is launched. If the sales start to go swiftly down, then they will support it, even making new games for it, like they did to ps2. You gotta keep in mind all the money they´ve spent. They want at least part back.

Wait wait, next generation means current generation? Hahahaha. Ok, ok, then when we talk about 8th gen we are supposed to say what? The next next generation?

Not everyone wants graphics over game play.
That being said, the PS3 came out with technology on the bleeding edge, so it has the slowest adoption rate. However, with BR-DVD Profile 2.0 compatibility and 1080p output, it does have the best technology.
The question thus becomes whether or not in the next generation -- around 2011 +/- 1 year, the competitors will introduce things that make the PS3 look old. Can Microsoft put out an Xbox 720 with BR-DVD that is reliable? Can Wii 2 have HD output, a HD and media streaming?
Even though Sony may seem set to some, technology is a moving target. I bought a home computer seven years ago with 256M of memory -- since expanded to 512M. I got a work computer four years ago with 1G of memory. I just bought my wife a laptop with 4G of memory. The point is that things will be very different before the normal console cycle is out and certainly before the 10-year plan has ended. And if the PS3:Xbox 720 is equivalent to PS2:PS3, then it could bode poorly for Sony.
