Forums - General Discussion - Obama's Lead on McCain in Polls Largest Since June

This gap will obviously shrink a little or even reverse after the RNC, but Obama is in a good place right now.  We will see how much Hurricane Gustav affects the RNC too.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Regardless of what the polls say...

Fuck polls.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Gustav looks like it might actually benefit the RNC. It's looking to be pretty mild and FEMA (and Captain Assclown, head of FEMA) actually did their job this time around.

Not to mention that Louisiana itself took a proactive approach and actually pushed the incredible idea that "hey, a lot fewer bad things will happen if we get people the fuck out of here before the storm hits".

You can't ever forgot Karl Rove's October surprise. There will be SOMETHING epic from that slimeball or his prodigy in October.

True. Never underestimate a Sith Lord.

The levies broke rocketpig, thats why people stayed. You naturally assume your government will protect you but no one did shit.

Theyre gonna arrest Rovey pretty soon. He's the guy that all these subpoena charges connect to

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

It was Nagan and Blanco's job to look out for their constituency and get people the fuck out of NO when the storm appeared, or at least have safe zones in the city that didn't involve packing a bunch of starving people into a football stadium.

They didn't. You can blame the Federal government for everything after that point but it was the state's job to make sure people weren't in the area when Katrina hit.

Every level of government failed the people of that area during Katrina. It's unfair to pin all the blame on the Feds and Bush. They're the ones who are supposed to come in after everything goes to shit, not prevent the shit from happening (the Federal funding of the levees themselves withstanding, of course, but that predates Bush by decades).

Last time I checked he wasn't working with the campaign, and is still in political exile for some of his questionable acts while in the White House.  Karl Rove also pulled quite a slander campaign on McCain in 2000, so I don't think McCain will seek his help.

Not to menion Rove is only interested in helping out a campaign if it has some tangible advantage for him, such as all the power he had as a political consultant while working with Bush the governor and Bush the pres.  And Rove is a political hand grenade at this point as he is still under investigation, so I don't think McCain would touch him even if he wanted to.

Rove is different from a lot of Republicans in that he isn't willing to go out of his way for his party (like some of the nutjob authors who think it is their duty to take down a candidate) if he isn't going to be benefitted in some way.  I can respect that.

If you want to know more about Rove, read Machiavelli's Shadow: The Rise and Fall of Karl Rove.  Fascinating biography.

I would recommend looking at the individual state polls as opposed to the national polls. When one looks at the individual state polls, the election appears much closer.

Exactly. Popular vote doesn't count in the end.
