Dammit, that means no party system. Oh well, I guess it is not really necessary in a game like this.

It means nothing of the sort00they've gone out of their way to let us know that there WILL be a detailed party system.  This is just with regard to hosting the game itself.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Doesn't the new Live update have some sort of option to group up before entering a game?

More then likely have a system similar to Halo where you can group up in a lobby before entering a game.

How can this be implemented?  A single server has a list of all parties that are looking for games, it groups up potential games, and sends them off to a seperate server for the game to start?

The dashboard update is for Live parties, not game specific parties.

Its about time we start getting dedicated servers for Live, the only other 360 games I know who have them is Final Fantasy (duh) and Frontlines

This might a dumb question, but what does this mean exactly?

Cod4 and Halo 3 does not use dedicated servers?

Would it mean no more losing connections?

COD4 and Halo 3 games are hosted by a player. L4D games will be hosted on a dedicated server owned and operated by either Valve or Live.

Edit: forgot to answer last part - yes it means no more issues with hosts dropping out since they'll be no host player.

awesome, thanks.  I hate it when hosts drop off

I don't know how XBL works exactly, but Steam will be introducing their Matchmaking system when Left 4 Dead comes out. Games are still run on dedicated servers, but there will be options to join parties based on skill and experience, on top of the existing Friends system.

I'm sure L4D will work out similarly on XBL as well.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Cool on Steam's part. I'm pretty exctied for Left4Dead now, on Steam at least.

As for Xbox Live, at least players shouldn't be as worried about lag now as 50 zombies charge at them.

Matchmaking will roll back to TF2 and probably CS and DOD as well, and it'll be available to all new non-Valve games (as well as games currently in development).

Well that is good, Steam is taking a page from Bungie and Live's book. Each server probably has to notify a main server that they want to be included in the round robin, and matches are divvied up between them.

Yes, well, console gaming should really take a page from PC developers' books as well...there's always been something nice about just a list of servers.

With constant dedicated servers from clans or pubs, you can build a community much faster than always waited for a friend to join a game or going through websites.

On PSN is anyone offering dedicated servers besides SCE?
