Forums - Sales - Impact of GTA4

TO tell you the truth Im not sick of GTA. Most people are sick of it because of Stories games. We havent had a real GTA game for what? 3 years.

3to1 or 2to1 I'd say 1.5to1. Why? Look at the Darkness.

You make a good point and it should be interesting to see how sales of The Darkness compare between the 360 and PS3 for the next few weeks.

gta4 will boost sales of xbox360 alot, and ps3 a little. (would you rather pay $560 or $460 for the same game?)

I agree that it will boost 360 sales more than PS3 sales, but I don't see the game hitting anywhere near San Andreas numbers (for one thing the total current user bases doesn't even match San Andreas numbers). I'm saying sales total between the systems will hit 9 million at the most, 7 million at the least. It's certainly a solid system seller for the 360 though and at least something to broaden the appeal of the PS3.

I don't know how good the two versions will do compared to each other, but I'm pretty sure that the 360 game will move more hardware.

You have to remember that the GTA-crowd are the casual gamers of last generation. Not the casuals that Nintendo is going after at the moment, but male teens that want to play action games and such stuff, but they don't read reviews, don't finish games etc.
Those people most likely haven't bought one of the HD-consoles yet, but GTA is a must-have for them and therefore they're buying one now. This will probably be the 360 because its lower price and the better library, especially in the action sector.

I even predict that GTA 4 will be moving more hardware than Halo 3.

To a casual gamer, the thought of having GTA4 and Halo3 might be too much of a temptation, especially when you can buy the X360 and both those games cheaper than a PS3. GTA and Halo are huge system sellers, and X360 have both.

does anybody here know 100% that the PS3 is getting a price cut ? even at 500$ it will be hard to get people to buy it just for GTA, eventhough its very popular I think the 360 has more potential seeing the Halo 3 is comming as well, will be interesting to see if lots of PS2 owners where waiting for this or if they don´t care what system they play it on, not sure what the exclusive content will do eather since I have no idea of how much extra gameplay that will be, man this sure is a interesting year to be a gamer isn´t it ???

another question, how will games like Mario Galaxy or Smash Brother Brawl do against GTA ??? with the Wii having a pretty big userbase righ now they will do very well, just how well ?, and will they move systems in the loong run ? I don´t know anybody with a Wii who sayes: "Mario ??? Meh, not for me." I mean everybody loves Mario, it´s like GTA without violence (so kids can play) but on mushrooms (so the stooners have something  to freak out over)

I have never play to any GTA game,
I m not a GTA fan,
But, this franchise is simply the best seller franchise on PS2 ! and compared to other FF/MGS, the sales of the last episode, San Andreas, were biger than the previous episode.
I dont know if the game will sell better on Xbo360 or PS3 because the user base are different so, ofc, we should expect more sales on the Xbox360 (it is why comparing sales numbers on 2 different hardware is not relevant).
In fact, we should talk about "relative sales" that take in count the hardware users base (for example : software X sales / users base numbers).

I think, in NA the 2 game version (Xbox/PS) will sell very well but since Xbox360 is cheapier and possess exclusive content, the Xbox360 version will sell, relatively, better.

In Europe, It's a complete different story.
People are waiting for price cut to buy PS3 (is price cut suppose to appear in europe too ?)and expect some good sequel. And the more expected sequel are GTA4 ! and PES 2008 ! (very very popular)
I expect these 2 games to be system sellers and to significatively improve the PS3 sales.
The Xbox360 sales will improve too but, really less than PS3 sales cause people simply dont care a lot about Xbox360 except in UK. And people like to play with the PS2 paddle.

Finally, even if the PS3 sales increase, 500 euros will still be too expensive to allow PS3 to compete with Wii. And PES2008 is going to Wii too.

Wait and See.

Time to Work !

Goodquestion. I expect both Mario and Smash to outsell GTA on the 360 and PS3 seperately, but combined it's pretty hard to beat GTA's overall sales. I would say with the Wii's userbase it's possible, but unlikely. One advantage the Wii games have this time though is GTA only has the hardcore audience this time between the PS360, and the casuals are what REALLY sell the game. Even casuals will buy Mario Galaxy, and they may even buy Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Brawl is a lot less casual though because to know most of the characters you have to have a pretty detailed knowledge of gaming. Of course, with all it's classic characters Smash has the advantage of attracting the lapsed gamers on the Wii.

naz, I would almost agree that SMG or SSBB will nearly outsell either GTA internation, but who knows.

However, the most important thing is, that GTA is a very, very, very solid selling franchise that has made it's transition to consoles (since it was a PC-only game early on, and never sold too hot on PS1 for GTA2).

You can't underestimate the value, and importance of a 16m+ seller PER IP. No game right now has that kind of clout outside of DS Brain Training. I'd even argue that SMG won't have that kind of pedigree (however, despite only 2 being out, I'd say SSBB has a strong pedigree as it sells well everywhere, and could even topple SMG).

Again, every GTA has sold very well, and hasn't missed a beat, therefore even with alot of next-gen competition (Saints Row, Crackdown, Godtather, Scarface), GTA is THE game.

Both itenerations will sell very well, and move alot of systems. GTAIV on PS3 will help those really wanting a PS3 (note I said those already planning on getting a PS3), make the plunge for their other big upcoming IPs. I still expect GTAIV on PS3 to sell around 4-6m, depending on various factors.

Likewise, GTAIV on X360 should be quite a bit bigger. I know some argue that h3 will make gamers pay (ie, tap out of money), but with Christmas merely 2mo after GTAIV, and H3 being a 4mo-old game, there will be plenty of buyers. Ultimately, GTAIV will do far better on 360 via exclusive content, and the far less restrictive X360 price (hopefully a price drop happens). GTAIV will sell to the casuals that will pick up the X360 later this year (I'd argue that H3 will sell to casuals too, and they'll have their 2nd big IP title to pick up in GTAIV, or even Maden 08).

So I'm still thinking that GTAIV will sell around a 2:1 ratio throughout it's lifetime. This is based on that GTAIV will have a far better tier ratio on the PS3, as it's still the must-have PS3 game this year (even past MGS4), whereas the X360 has a huge slew of other titles, but still, 10m is no weak matter.

IMO, I wouldn't worry about how "the darkness" is going to sell the rest of the year. I'd expect the continued 2:1 ratio to hover around the same mark. If anything changed, I'd expect the 360 version to pull out ahead a bit in the ratio, as the 360 userbase should adopt the game a bit better.

Nevertheless, I do believe that in the USA, GTAIV should do quite a bit better (3:1) in the US for 360, whereas the Euro and J-versions should do near 1:1 in Europe (maybe 1.25 for the 360), and should be 5:1 in Japan in the PS3s favor

Really? I think GTAIV will be the best-selling GTA in Japan. I think it could sell 500k or more between both itenerations).

The only prohibitive factor on GTAIV blowing out the door on SA's 18m PS2/Xbox cume is due to the price question of the PS3/360. Had the PS3 of been far cheaper ($300), I wouldn't doubt that GTAIV could of sold 10m+ on the 360 (as it is now), but still manage near that for the PS3.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
