Forums - Gaming - Do demos hinder or help Sales?

If it's a good game with a well designed demo then it will help the game sell. Personally I always demo a game before I buy if it is possible.

I hate the fact that no Wii games have demos (WHY?? If nothing else at least it would sell Nintendo Mags if they had demo DVD's on them) and I possibly would of bought more games if I could of tried them out.

On the other hand at least 2 of the games I have bought on the Wii I wish I had not and a demo might of prevented me from buying them.

Playing : PC  AOE, DiRT 2, Runes of Magic, Wings of Prey & Planetside 2

Wii U : Nintendoland, Super Mario U  & Fifa 2013 demo

DS : Guitar Hero : On Tour

As long as its a well made demo of a good game, it will help sales. Ofcourse this also works the other way around, bad demo's will see less retail sales.

If a Demo plays good, then yes it will help sys especially on PC games where u can test out if u can run it or not. I think it also comes with interest if u think after playing the demo if u want more of its stuff.

Kinda unfair that u cant test out the Wii games but only watch videos of it. Still that helps if ur interested.

Above I'm a proud Gran Turismo fan, not a Sony fanboy, and now a proud 360 owner, but sharing xbox live accts ATM

End of 2009 Predictions (made Jan 1, 2009): My predictions were pretty accurate, the 360 was over and the Wii was just under.

Wii: 65 mil (yea I'm crazy) 360: 35 mil (its getting there) PS3: 30 mil (the slim better do well)

End of 2010 Predictions (made Jan 7, 2010):

Wii: 81 mil  360: 47 mil PS3: 45 mil

Usually, if I take the time to play a demo, I already planned on buying the game.

On a few occasions, I've been turned off by a demo (Dark Sectors) and once I bought a game despite a crappy demo and learned that the game was awesome (The Simpsons Game).

This might sound a bit obvious but Demos can help a game or hinder its sales. A good Demo will help a bad Demo will hinder.

It depends on the quality of the game the demo is supposed to demonstrate. Also, it depends on the quality of the demo.

No they don't help they hinder the sales if you notice all the best sellers do not have demos, why do you think Assasins Creed sold so well they do not lounch a demo if people would had played a demo, i'm sure the sales of asassins Cred would had been less. I also had played a lot of demos but then i don not buy the game becasue the demo sucks.

I think betas can do more damage than demo's. I think Quake Wars on PC is an example. I know lots people cancelled pre-orders after playing the Beta, which is a shame.

Usually (and I mean usually), the demo's come out quite soon before the final product, so they are more polished and closer to the final version. Still, I only play demos for games that I am already interested in. If the demo is teh suck, then I might lose interest. I think maybe demos and betas are no good for sales, but good for consumers.

It depends on the game. I was totally sold by the Bioshock demo, and will likewise soon pick up Rainbow Six Vegas and Too Human based on their demos. On the other hand, the Timeshift demo just didn't do it for me so I passed on it.
